Asoccupationalreconstructingandgrowingincomeinequalityhavebecomeincreasinglyevident,aheateddebateastothecausesandmagnitudeofthesechangesarose.Twodominantbodiesofthoughtemergedaroundtheissue:thejob-skillmismatchthesisandthepolarizationthesis.Mismatchtheoristsarguethatthereisanincreasingdistancebetweenthehighskillrequirementsofpost-industrialjobsandtheinadequatetrainingandmediocrequalificationsofworkers.Theyseethepost-industrialeconomyleavingbehindunskilledworkers,especiallywomenandminorities.Forthemismatchtheorist,thetrendtowardgreaterinequalityistemporaryaridwilldissipateoncethesupplyofworkersacquirestheskillsdemandedbyapost-industrialeconomy.Andtheypredictthattheworkerswillexperienceanupgradingintheirwagesoverthelongrun.Polarizationtheorists,ontheotherhand,believethattheriseininequalityispermanent,aresultoftheshifttoaservice-basedeconomy.Thisvisionofthepostindustrialeconomyischaracteristicallypolarized.Theproblemaccordingtothesetheorists,isthetypeofjobsbeinggeneratedintheneweconomy,notworkerattributes.Becausetheybelievethecausesarestructuralandpermanent,polarizationtheoristswoulddenytheefficacyofpublicpoliciesdesignedtoeducateandtrainunskilledworkers.Theypredictalong-termcontinuationofthetrendtowardsincreasingincomeinequality.
