2.子曰:“巧言令色,鮮矣仁?!盕airappearancesaresuspicious.
TheMastersaid,"Finewordsandaninsinuating(諂媚的,討好的)appearanceareseldomassociatedwithtruevirtue."3.曾子曰:“吾日三省吾身:爲(wèi)人謀而不忠乎與朋友交而不信乎傳不習(xí)乎”HowthephilosopherTsangdailyexaminedhimself,toguardagainsthisbeingguiltyofanyimposition.
ThephilosopherTsangsaid,"Idailyexaminemyselfonthreepoints:--whether,intransactingbusinessforothers,Imayhavebeennotfaithful;--whether,inintercoursewithfriends,Imayhavebeennotsincere;--whetherImayhavenotmasteredandpracticedtheinstructionsofmyteacher."4.子曰:“不患人之不己知,患不知人也?!盤(pán)ersonalattainmentshouldbeourchiefaim.
TheMastersaid,"Iwillnotbeafflictedatmen'snotknowingme;IwillbeafflictedthatIdonotknowmen.5.子曰:“《詩(shī)》三百,一言以蔽之,曰‘思無(wú)邪’?!盩hepuredesignoftheBookofPoetry.
TheMastersaid,"IntheBookofPoetryarethreehundredpieces,butthedesignofthemallmaybeembracedinonesentence--'Havingnodepravedthoughts.'"6.子曰:“吾十有五而志於學(xué),三十而立,四十而不惑,五十而知天命,六十而耳順,七十而從心所欲,不踰矩。”Confucius'sownaccountofhisgradualprogressandattainments.

9子貢問(wèn)君子。子曰:“先行其言而後從之。”Howwiththesuperiormanwordsfollowactions.
Tsze-kungaskedwhatconstitutedthesuperiorman.TheMastersaid,"Heactsbeforehespeaks,andafterwardsspeaksaccordingtohisactions."10.子曰:“學(xué)而不思則罔,思而不學(xué)則殆?!盜nlearning,readingandthoughtmustbecombined.
TheMastersaid,"Learningwithoutthoughtislaborlost;thoughtwithoutlearningisperilous."11.子曰:“由,誨女知之乎!知之爲(wèi)知之,不知爲(wèi)不知,是知也。”Thereshouldbenopretenseintheprofessionofknowledge,orthedenialofignorance.
TheMastersaid,"Y?,shallIteachyouwhatknowledgeis
Whenyouknowathing,toholdthatyouknowit;andwhenyoudonotknowathing,toallowthatyoudonotknowit;--thisisknowledge."
12.子曰:“非其鬼而祭之,諂也。見(jiàn)義不爲(wèi),無(wú)勇也?!盢eitherinsacrificenorinanyotherpracticemayamandoanythingbutwhatisright.
.TheMastersaid,"Foramantosacrificetoaspiritwhichdoesnotbelongtohimisflattery.2."Toseewhatisrightandnottodoitiswantofcourage."13.孔子謂季氏:“八佾舞於庭,是可忍也,孰不可忍也?”Confucius'sindignationattheusurpationofroyalrites.

14.定公問(wèn):“君使臣,臣事君,如之何?”孔子對(duì)曰:“君使臣以禮,臣事君以忠?!盩heguidingprinciplesintherelationofprinceandminister.
ThedukeTingaskedhowaprinceshouldemployhisministers,andhowministersshouldservetheirprince.Confuciusreplied,"Aprinceshouldemployhisministeraccordingtoaccordingtotherulesofpropriety;ministersshouldservetheirprincewithfaithfulness."
15.子曰:“朝聞道,夕死可矣!”Theimportanceofknowingtherightway.
TheMastersaid,"Ifamaninthemorningheartherightway,hemaydieintheeveningwithoutregret."16.子曰:“見(jiàn)賢思齊焉,見(jiàn)不賢而內(nèi)自省也?!盩helessonstobelearnedfromobservingmenofdifferentcharacters.
TheMastersaid,"Whenweseemenofworth,weshouldthinkofequalingthem;whenweseemenofacontrarycharacter,weshouldturninwardsandexamineourselves."17.子曰:“父母在,不遠(yuǎn)遊;遊必有方?!盇sonnotoughttogotoadistancewherehewillnotbeabletopaythedueservicestohisparents.
TheMastersaid,"Whilehisparentsarealive,thesonmaynotgoabroadtoadistance.Ifhedoesgoabroad,hemusthaveafixedplacetowhichhegoes."18.子曰:“君子欲訥於言而敏於行?!盧uleoftheChün-tszeabouthiswordsandactions.
TheMastersaid,"Thesuperiormanwishestobeslowinhisspeechandearnestinhisconduct."19.子貢曰:“我不欲人之加諸我也,吾亦欲無(wú)加諸人。”子曰:“賜也,非爾所及也。”Thedifficultyofattainingtothenotwishingtodotoothersaswewishthemnottodotous.
Tsze-kungsaid,"WhatIdonotwishmentodotome,Ialsowishnottodotomen."TheMastersaid,"Ts'ze,youhavenotattainedtothat."20.子貢問(wèn)曰:“孔文子何以謂之‘文’也?”子曰:“敏而好學(xué),不恥下問(wèn),是以謂之‘文’也?!盇nexampleoftheprincipleonwhichhonoraryposthumoustitleswereconferred.
Tsze-kungasked,saying,"OnwhatgrounddidKung-wangetthattitleofWAN"
TheMastersaid,"Hewasofanactivenatureandyetfondoflearning,andhewasnotashamedtoaskandlearnofhisinferiors!--OnthesegroundshehasbeenstyledWAN."
21.子曰:“質(zhì)勝文則野,文勝質(zhì)則史。文質(zhì)彬彬,然後君子。”Theequalblendingofsolidexcellenceandornamentalaccomplishmentsinacompletecharacter.
TheMastersaid,"Wherethesolidqualitiesareinexcessofaccomplishments,wehaverusticity;wheretheaccomplishmentsareinexcessofthesolidqualities,wehavethemannersofaclerk.Whentheaccomplishmentsandsolidqualitiesareequallyblended,wethenhavethemanofvirtue."22.子曰:“知之者不如好之者,好之者不如樂(lè)之者?!盌ifferentstagesofattainment.
TheMastersaid,"Theywhoknowthetrutharenotequaltothosewholoveit,andtheywholoveitarenotequaltothosewhodelightinit."23.子曰:“知者樂(lè)水,仁者樂(lè)山。知者動(dòng),仁者靜。知者樂(lè),仁者壽?!盋ontrastsofthewiseandthevirtuous.
TheMastersaid,"Thewisefindpleasureinwater;thevirtuousfindpleasureinhills.Thewiseareactive;thevirtuousaretranquil.Thewisearejoyful;thevirtuousarelong-lived."24.子曰:“默而識(shí)之,學(xué)而不厭,誨人不倦,何有於我哉?”Confucius'shumbleestimateofhimself.
TheMastersaid,"Thesilenttreasuringupofknowledge;learningwithoutsatiety;andinstructingotherswithoutbeingwearied:--whichoneofthesethingsbelongstome"
25.子曰:“不憤不啟,不悱不發(fā)。舉一隅不以三隅反,則不復(fù)也?!盋onfuciusrequiredarealdesireandabilityinhisdisciples.
TheMastersaid,"Idonotopenupthetruthtoonewhoisnoteagertogetknowledge,norhelpoutanyonewhoisnotanxioustoexplainhimself.WhenIhavepresentedonecornerofasubjecttoanyone,andhecannotfromitlearntheotherthree,Idonotrepeatmylesson."26.子曰:“我非生而知之者。好古,敏以求之者也?!盋onfucius'sknowledgenotconnate,buttheresultofhisstudyofantiquity.
TheMastersaid,"Iamnotonewhowasborninthepossessionofknowledge;Iamonewhoisfondofantiquity,andearnestinseekingitthere."27.子曰:“三人行,必有我?guī)熝?。擇其善者而從之,其不善者而改之。”Howamanmayfindinstructorsforhimself.
TheMastersaid,"WhenIwalkalongwithtwoothers,theymayservemeasmyteachers.Iwillselecttheirgoodqualitiesandfollowthem,theirbadqualitiesandavoidthem."28.子曰:“君子坦蕩蕩,小人長(zhǎng)戚戚。”ContrastintheirfeelingsbetweentheChün-tszeandthemeanman.
TheMastersaid,"Thesuperiormanissatisfiedandcomposed;themeanmanisalwaysfullofdistress."曾子曰:“士不可以不弘毅,任重而道遠(yuǎn)。仁以爲(wèi)己任,不亦重乎死而後已,不亦遠(yuǎn)乎”Thenecessitytotheofficerofcompassandvigorofmind.
1.ThephilosopherTsangsaid,"Theofficermaynotbewithoutbreadthofmindandvigorousendurance.Hisburdenisheavyandhiscourseislong.2."Perfectvirtueistheburdenwhichheconsidersitishistosustain;--isitnotheavyOnlywithdeathdoeshiscoursestop;--isitnotlong
29.子曰:“不在其位,不謀其政?!盓verymanshouldmindhisownbusiness.
TheMastersaid,"Hewhoisnotinanyparticularofficehasnothingtodowithplansfortheadministrationofitsduties."
30.子在川上曰:“逝者如斯夫!不舍晝夜?!盚owConfuciuswasaffectedbyarunningstream.
TheMasterstandingbyastream,said,"Itpassesonjustlikethis,notceasingdayornight!"31.子曰:“後生可畏,焉知來(lái)者之不如今也?四十五十而無(wú)聞焉,斯亦不足畏也已!”Howandwhyayouthshouldberegardedwithrespect.
TheMastersaid,"Ayouthistoberegardedwithrespect.Howdoweknowthathisfuturewillnotbeequaltoourpresent
Ifhereachtheageoffortyorfifty,andhasnotmadehimselfheardof,thenindeedhewillnotbeworthbeingregardedwithrespect."
32.子曰:“三軍可奪帥也,匹夫不可奪志也?!盩hewillunsubduable.
TheMastersaid,"Thecommanderoftheforcesofalargestatemaybecarriedoff,butthewillofevenacommonmancannotbetakenfromhim."33.子曰:“歲寒,然後知松柏之後彫也。”Menareknownintimesofadversity.
TheMastersaid,"Whentheyearbecomescold,thenweknowhowthepineandthecypressarethelasttolosetheirleaves."34.顏淵問(wèn)仁。子曰:“克己復(fù)禮爲(wèi)仁。一日克己復(fù)禮,天下歸仁焉。爲(wèi)仁由己,而由人乎哉?”顏淵曰:“請(qǐng)問(wèn)其目?”子曰:“非禮勿視,非禮勿聽(tīng),非禮勿言,非禮勿動(dòng)。”顏淵曰:“回雖不敏,請(qǐng)事斯語(yǔ)矣!”Howtoattaintoperfectvirtue:--aconversationwithYenYüan.
1.YenYüanaskedaboutperfectvirtue.TheMastersaid,"Tosubdueone'sselfandreturntopropriety,isperfectvirtue.Ifamancanforonedaysubduehimselfandreturntopropriety,allunderheavenwillascribeperfectvirtuetohim.Isthepracticeofperfectvirtuefromamanhimself,orisitfromothers"
2.YenYüansaid,"Ibegtoaskthestepsofthatprocess."TheMasterreplied,"Looknotatwhatiscontrarytopropriety;listennottowhatiscontrarytopropriety;speaknotwhatiscontrarytopropriety;makenomovementwhichiscontrarytopropriety."YenYüanthensaid,"ThoughIamdeficientinintelligenceandvigor,Iwillmakeitmybusinesstopracticethislesson."35.死生有命,富貴在天。"'Deathandlifehavetheirdeterminedappointment;richesandhonorsdependuponHeaven.'36.子曰:“君子成人之美,不成人之惡。小人反是?!監(jiān)ppositeinfluenceuponothersofthesuperiormanandthemeanman.
TheMastersaid,"Thesuperiormanseekstoperfecttheadmirablequalitiesofmen,anddoesnotseektoperfecttheirbadqualities.Themeanmandoestheoppositeofthis."37.子曰:“不患人之不己知,患其不能也?!盋oncernshouldbeaboutourpersonalattainment,andnotabouttheestimationofothers.
TheMastersaid,"Iwillnotbeconcernedatmen'snotknowingme;Iwillbeconcernedatmyownwantofability."38.或曰:“以德報(bào)怨,何如?”子曰:“何以報(bào)德?以直報(bào)怨,以德報(bào)德?!盙oodisnottobereturnedforevil;eviltobemetsimplywithjustice.

TheMastersaid,"Ifamantakenothoughtaboutwhatisdistant,hewillfindsorrownearathand."40.子貢問(wèn)曰:“有一言而可以終身行之者乎?”子曰:“其恕乎!己所不欲,勿施於人。”Thegreatprincipleofreciprocityistheruleoflife.
Tsze-kungasked,saying,"Isthereonewordwhichmayserveasaruleofpracticeforallone'slife"TheMastersaid,"IsnotRECIPROCITYsuchawordWhatyoudonotwantdonetoyourself,donotdotoothers."
41.子曰:“過(guò)而不改,是謂過(guò)矣!”Theculpabilityofnotreformingknownfaults.
