申請研讀的學(xué)位越高,以往的科研、學(xué)術(shù)成果和工作經(jīng)驗等等就越是重要。許多申請者錯誤地認(rèn)為自己發(fā)表的文章已經(jīng)列在里面了,在中就不應(yīng)該再提。其實,個人履歷是一份完全不同的文件。它是對個人經(jīng)歷的一種簡潔而全面的介紹,使得讀者對申請者能夠很快有一個大致的了解。自薦信則是需要(或是希望)讀者仔細(xì)閱讀的,它要介紹申請者的成就、抱負(fù)和個人品德。所以申請者不用擔(dān)心內(nèi)容上的重復(fù)。還有許多申請者硬是要把自薦信的篇幅壓縮在一頁紙內(nèi),因而只能很簡要地提到自己的成就。其實,如果內(nèi)容充實,為什么不能寫到二至三頁呢?比如說到發(fā)表的論文,往往只提到一個題目。其實,寫一篇科研論文往往是要付出巨大心血的。這不光是寫篇文章,而是反復(fù)的`科學(xué)論證和無數(shù)次實驗的結(jié)晶。申請者起碼應(yīng)該用二至三個句子,說明這篇論文所代表的實驗、實驗用的方法、目的和獲得的成績。還應(yīng)該說明通過發(fā)表這篇(或這幾篇)論文,申請者在這一領(lǐng)域做出了什么貢獻(xiàn),獲得了哪些思想方法、認(rèn)識和科研手段上的提高。

還有的申請者犯的是一個相反的錯誤,他們把高中甚至更早的成就也不厭其煩地列在上。比如當(dāng)上了三好學(xué)生、少先隊長之類的。因為中國學(xué)生申請的學(xué)位最低的也是碩士研究生,大學(xué)時期的成績或是隨后工作上的成就更為貼切,也應(yīng)該足以用作素材了。當(dāng)然,少兒時期的成就,若是對隨后的學(xué)術(shù)道路產(chǎn)生了重大的影響的,也可以提。有的申請者對某一學(xué)科,比如說數(shù)學(xué),情有獨(dú)鐘,很早就顯露出天才,在中學(xué)時期就在數(shù)學(xué)競賽中獲獎,由此激發(fā)了對此學(xué)科的強(qiáng)烈興趣,從此矢志不渝。這樣提就非常妥當(dāng)。

最好不提的還有政治觀點(diǎn)、宗教信仰和其它一切容易引起爭議的不同尋常的話題。有個別申請者在文件中提到了“上帝”這樣的字眼,犯了西方社會宗教和學(xué)術(shù)分離的大忌。

最后一點(diǎn)提醒讀者注意的是,對自己的事業(yè)和生活道路上的挫折沒有必要諱莫如深。許多杰出的人物都曾經(jīng)歷過困頓。人們一般會欣賞那些不被困難壓倒,不因失敗沮喪,在逆境中尋找光明的人。關(guān)鍵在于你是否用積極正面的態(tài)度對待挫折并表現(xiàn)出這種積極的態(tài)度。
