GeneralSafePracticesShieldingshouldbeconsideredonlinebreaksifandwhenpractical.
Employeesperforminglinebreaksshouldpositionthemselvesontheupwindsideof—andasfarawayaspossiblefrom—anypotentialmaterialrelease.
Whenbreakingintolineswithoutanexistingbreakapparatus(e.g.,vent,drain,flange,tubingfitting),makethebreakusingacuttingordrillingdevice.
Thisdevicemustbenonelectricalandproducenosparks(e.g.,anair-operateddrillmotororhacksaw).D. Whenbreakingintoaflange,loosentheboltnutsontheloweroppositesideawayfromtheworkerfirst,keepingtheboltnutsnearesttheworkerundercontrol.Thisallowsthelinetoseparateinawaythatcausesanymaterialreleasedtobeawayfromtheworker.
Aftertheflangeisopenedawayfromtheworker—ensuringnomaterialisreleased—loosentheremainingboltsandspreadtheflangesapart.Removethegasket,positionitthroughtheflangeboltcircle,orpositionitinawaytovisuallydetectalinebreakhasbeenmade.(Ensurethegasketisnotblockingthecreatedopening.)
GeneralSafePractices,continuedNote: Ifflangeboltsareseverelycorroded,theymayneedtobereplacedbeforeproceeding!Looseningand/orremovalofcorrodedboltsshouldbeconsideredalinebreak,necessitatingfollowingofthelinebreakprocedureandwearingtheproperPPEfortheservice.
GeneralSafePractices,continuedE. Whenavalvebonnetmustberemoved,thepipelinemustbedrainedandthevalveplacedintheopenpositionbeforethebonnetboltsareloosened.
Ballandplugvalvesmayhaveliquidsorpressureinthecavityunderthestempackingandbonnetregardlessofthevalvepositionorpressureinadjacentlines.
Ballandplugvalvesthataretoberemovedmustbeopened,closed,andreopenedafterthesystemisdrained,toensuretrappedliquidorpressurehasbeenrelieved.GeneralSafePractices,continuedF. Whenbreakingapipeunion,loosenithalfwayandcheckfortrappedpressureorliquidbypushingthepipeawayfromtheworker.
G. Whenbreakingatubingfitting,loosenitaquartertohalfwayandcheckfortrappedpressureorliquidbygentlypullingitapartandflexingthefitting.
SpecialprecautionmustbeexercisedwhenbreakingaGrayloc*-typefitting,becauseofthedifficultyincontrollingaleak.Ifthisbecomestheonlypossiblebreakpoint,shieldingmustbeconsidered.*GraylocisaregisteredtrademarkofYellowstoneEnergyProducts.GeneralSafePractices,continuedI. Abarricadeorproperlycordoned-offareashouldbeconsideredtoadequatelyprotectpeoplenotinvolvedinthelinebreakfromasuddenunexpectedreleaseofthehazardousmaterial.
J. Whenthelinebreakconsistsofremovingavesselflangeorhead,alwaysbackalltheboltsoffthreeorfourturns,inanormalpattern,beforeremovinganybolts.Thiswillallowtheflange/coverorheadtobackoffthegasketandallowanycontainedpressure(gas/liquid)toleakoutofthejoint,indicatingthepotentialpresenceofpressure.Thistechniquewillensurethattheflange/coverorheadremainscaptiveinplaceuntilanypressurehasventedoff.HazardsPipingsystemcomplexities(e.g.,multi-floorroutes,loops,pockets,turns)cancreateaninabilitytoensureasystemisemptyandpressure-freeevenafterlinebreaksarecompleted.Thevolume,pressure,andtemperatureofthematerialthatcouldbereleasedfromalinebreakshouldbeconsideredpriortomakinganybreaks.Addedhazardsexistwhenvacuumsarecreatedduringcooling.Vacuumscanholdliquidsthatunexpectedlyreleasewhenthetemperatureequalizesandcausespressurization.ExamplesofliquidsthatcreatevacuumduringcoolingareDP:DPO(Dowtherm),steam,andsteamcondensate.Hazards,continued4. RoutineTaskAtaskthatisperformedbyasingleworkgrouponaperiodicbasisthatisbasedonannuallyreviewedwrittenprocedures.TheproceduremustclearlyoutlinethestepsandcontrolsnecessaryandspecifyrequiredPPEforthetask,consistentwithsitesafetyprocedures.Trainingonthis“RoutineTask”shallbedocumentedandcurrent.BlindFlangeAsolidflangemanufacturedaccordingtoANSI/ASMEStandardB16.5.Blindflangesmayrequirematerialmatchingthepipingsystemorequivalentbasematerial.Insomecases,carbonsteelblindflangesmaybecladwiththepipeorequipmentbasematerial.LineBlank
(Alsocalledaskilletblankandfryingpan)Aslipblankinstalledbetweentwoflanges,fabricatedinaccordancewiththecurrentissueofDuPontEngineeringStandardP9E*.Whenselectingalllineblanks,thefollowingmustbeconsidered:thebasematerialofthepipeorequipment,theserviceorprocess,the
