th1.1FrancisscootkeyFitzgerald,whowasbornin24,Sep,1896andstdiedin21,Dec,1940,wasoneofthemostoutstandingAmericanauthorsin20century.FitzgeraldwasanAmericannovelistlivinginST.Paul,Minnesota.Hisfatherwasafurnisher.Afterfinishinghiseducationinseniorhighschoolin1913andhewasadmittedintoPrincetonUniversitytoreceivefurthereducation.HewrotethescriptsandlyricsforthePrincetontriangleclubmusicals.Hefoundatheatricalcompanyhimselfandwroteforliteraryreviewincampus,hewasacontributortothePrincetontigerhumormagazineandtheNassauliterarymagazine.Unfortunately,hedroppedoutofschoolbecauseofhispoorhealth.In1917,hewasrecruitedandengagedinmilitarytrainingalldaylong,butneverjoinedanybattleabroad.Afterretiringfromthearmy,hekeptwriting.In1918,hemarriedanarrogantanddisobedientgirlnamedZelda.In1920,hislongnovelnamedthisslideofparadisewaspublished,whichmadehimafamousliteraryfigure;healsoformedgoodrelationshipswithmanyfamousAmericanwriterssuchasHemingway.In1925,thegreatGatsbythatIwilltalkabouttodaywaspublished.ThisnovelhelpedFitzgeraldgainagoodreputationinmodernAmericanliterature,hewasalsoaspokesmanfor“JazzAge“in1920sandoneoftherepresentativeof“l(fā)ostgeneration”writers.Fitzgeraldkeptadiligentwritinglifeaftergaininggreatfame.However,hiswifeswankandsufferedamentaldisorders,whichbroughthimgreatpain.Itbecamehardforhimtomaketheendsmeet.HeaccompaniedsoseriouspovertythatheoncewenttoHollywoodtowriteascripttoearnaliving.In1929,Americawasstrokedbythegreatdepression,Fitzgerald?sgoldenagehadgoneaway,Fitzgeralddrawnhimselfinspiritualcollapseandimmoderatedrinking.In1940,Fitzgeralddiedofheartdiseaseveryyoungattheageof44inLosAngeles.1.2Briefintroduction:ThisisastoryaboutGatsbyandhispursuitforthe?Americandreams?.DuringtheWorldWarOne,thepoorsoldierGatsbyfellinlovewithanupperclassgirlnamedDaisy.Butduetothewidegapbetweenthem,DaisydecidedtomarryTom,amanofherclass,insteadofGatsby.Broken-heartedGatsbythenheldtheconvictionthatmoneywasofthegreatestimportance.Hestronglybelievedinthe?Americandreams?,whichasweallknow,advocatesthatonecanachievewhateverheorshelikesthroughcontinuousefforts.HestrivedforfiveyearstobecomeamillionaireandboughtavillanearDaisy?stoattracther.HewastooaddictedtohisfantasytorealizethatDaisywasnolongerthelovelygirlsheusedtobe.Eventually,hewaskilledbecauseofhercrime.2.1duringthewar.DaisyfailedtokeepherloveforGatsbywhowasfightingforhiscountry.Shemarriedtom,amanwithlargewealthandhighsocialstatus.AlthoughGatsbyhadtriedtowinbackdaisy.However,thepreviousgoddessinGatsby?shearthadchangedintoamaterialgirl.Shecaredaboutnothingbutherselfandmoney.DaisywastouchedbyGatsby?sperseveranceandinfatuation,whichleadtohisdeathinfleshandinspirit.2.2Inthenovel,Gatsbyrevealshimselftobeaninnocent,hopefulyoungmanwhostakeseverythingonhisdream,notrealizingthathisdreamisunworthyofhim.ToGatsby,hisdreamIofspiritualreunionwithDaisy,buthispriordreamiswealth.Hethinksthatwealthcansolveallhisproblems:time,Daisy,andlove.Inthenovel,Gatsbyusesthemostlavishparty,sumptuousmansion,andgorgeousmachinetoimpressDaisy.Andthegreenlight,situatedattheendofDaisy’sEastEggdock,representsGatsby’shopesanddreamsforthefuture.GatsbyassociatesitwithDaisy.Butintheend,daisywasn’tmovedbyGatsby’spersistenceanddevotion,what’sworse,Gatsbylosthislifefordaisy’smurdertomyrtle.2.3nick,thefirstnarrativepointofviewinthisnovelwasaneutralperson.Hewasaviewerofthewholestoryanddidn’tgethimselfinvolvedintheconflicts.Hewasjusttellingusthetruthandwhathesaw.Itwashisroleinthisnovelthatmadehiscommentsonpeopleandthingsmoreobjectiveandreliable.3.1ThegreatGatsbyisabouttheAmericandreamandthedownfallofthosewhoattempttoreachtheillusionarygoals.AmericandreammeansthatAmericaisalandofinfinitepossibilityinwhicheveryonehastheopportunitytosucceedinhislife.Thedreamdiffersfrompeopletopeople.InthegreatGatsby,thedreamisthatonecanacquirehappinessthroughwealthandpower.HisAmericandreamisnotmaterialpossession.HeonlycomesintorichessothathecanfulfillhistrueAmericandream,daisy.ThegreatGatsbyisanelegyofcorruptionoftheAmericandream;thenovelclearlyshowsthatthereisnowayfrommoneytolove,frommaterialtospirit.TheauthorcriticizestheAmericansocietyin1920s.ItisnotonlythetragedyoflovebetweenDaisyandGatsbybutalsothetragedyoftheAmericandream.4.1theemploymentofsymbolismSymbolismistheuseofsymbolstorepresentideasorqualities.
