1、 WhatisPositionPaper?Positionpaperisawrittenstatementofyournationsviewonthetopic.Usingoutsideresearch,delegatesshoulddescribetheessentialstancetheirnationhasontheissuebeingdiscussed.Manydelegatesusetheirpositionpapersfortheirfirstspeechinthecommittee,eitherbyreadingsectionsoutloudorpullingimportantp

2、hrasesorideasfromthem,soitisalsohelpfultofocusyourthoughtsandidentifythemainpointsyouwanttoaddressinthecommittee.ContentofPositionPaperAgoodpositionpaperwillnotonlyprovidefactsbutalsomakeproposalsforresolutions.Itshallcontainthefollowings:abriefstatementonthesignificanceofthetopic;aclearstatementofy

8、suchastheadoptionoftheDeclarationontheEliminationofViolenceagainstWomen,theUnitedNationshasnotbeenabletoalleviatetheinjusticewomenworldwideexperiencedaily.TheKingdomofDenmarkbelievesthatinordertoendviolenceagainstwomen,nationsmustlooktoempowerwomeninallaspectsofsociety.Thisincludespromotingequalgend

9、errolesingovernment,civilsociety,educationandbusiness.However,Denmarkalsorecognizestheneedtocombathumanrights-abusesagainstwomenastheyoccur,andnonationisimmunetogenderviolence.In2002,theDanishGovernmentlaunchedanextensiveactionplantocombatdomesticviolenceagainstwomen.Theplanincludesmeasurestohelptre

10、atabusedwomen,identifyandprosecutetheperpetrators,andincorporateprofessionalmedicalandpsychologicalstaffintotherehabilitationprocess.Theactionplancurrentlyreachesouttobothgovernmentalandnongovernmentalgroupsonthelocallevelthroughoutthenation.TheDanishCentreforHumanRightsinCopenhagen,Denmarksforemost

11、nationalhumanrightsinstitutionalsopromotesandprotectshumanrights.BasedontheCentersresearch,Denmarksparliamentcanpromotehuman-rights-basedlegislationandeducation/awarenessprogramsthroughoutthenation.TheCentrealsoaddressestheU.N.CommissiononHumanRightsannuallyregardinghumanrightsdevelopmentsinDenmarka

12、ndinternationally.Denmarkhasnorecordofcommittingmajorhumanrightsviolations,mostimportantlyanytargetedatwomen.Inits2003AnnualReport,AmnestyInternationalalsofoundnohumanrightsviolationsagainstDanishwomen.WomenareinvaluabletoDenmarkssocietyandhaveachievedsignificanteconomicandsocialgainsinthe20thcentur

13、y.Currently,75percentofmedicalstudentsinDenmarkarewomen.DenmarkisconfidentthatthisCouncilcanbringaboutanendtoviolenceagainstwomenwithoutcompromisingthesovereigntyofmemberstates.Educationremainsperhapsthemostusefultoolinprotectingvictimsofgender-basedviolence.Governments,U.N.agencies,andnongovernment

14、alorganizations(NGOs)canplanacoordinatedcampaignthateducatesnationalpopulationsonthevariouswayswomenareviolentlytargeted.Similarly,harmfultraditions,suchashonorkillingsandfemalegenitalmutilation,mustbestoppedbyreformingtraditionalviewsofwomeninsociety.Childrenofbothsexesneedtobetaughtatanearlyagetov

15、aluetherightsofwomeninordertopreventsuchviolenceintheirgeneration.AnotherwaytostopgenderviolencewouldbetoreproachmemberstatesthatconsistentlyviolatetreatiessuchastheConventiononPoliticalRightsofWomen(1952),theConventionontheEliminationofAllFormsofDiscriminationagainstWomen(1979),andtheDeclarationontheEliminationofViolenceagainstWomen(1993).AlthoughthisCommitteecannotimposesanctions,itcanpassresolutionsverballycondemningstatesthatcommithumanrightsviolations.TheU.N.HighCommissionerforHumanRightscanalsomeetwithrepresentativesofgovernmentsthatviolatetheabovetreatiestodiscusspossiblesoluti
