3、torforhissometimes-unorthodoxideasonmanagementandproductdevelopment.Wedontthinkaboutmakingmoney,Mr.MasaidinSeptemberduringtheSirGordonWuDistinguishedSpeakersForumatColumbiaBusinessSchool,sponsoredbytheChazenInstituteforInternationalBusiness.Wethinkaboutcreatingvalueforsociety,forthepeople,andforthec

4、ustomer.Andbecausewedontthinkaboutmakingmoney,wemakemoney.Thatmightsoundflippantingfromsomeonewhosewebsiteraised$billionin202X,makingitthesecondlargestInternetIPOinhistory(onlyGoogles,at$billion,waslarger).Today,marketcapitalizationforAlibabaisnearly$10billion,andTaobaohasmushroomedintoChinaslargest

5、retailerbysomemeasures.ThatsallthemoreremarkableconsideringthatMr.MaoperatesinacountrywithsomeofthemostrestrictiveInternetcensorshippoliciesintheworld.Still,hehassucceededbyadheringtoonesimplesix-wordtenet:customersfirst,employeessecond,shareholdersthird.TheEarlyDaysDressedcasuallyincanvasshoesandaw

6、hitewindbreaker,Mr.MarecountedfortheaudiencehischildhoodinHangzhou,amajorcityinChinasYangtzeRiverdelta.Hewas,hesaid,afanofwuxia(martialarts)novels,andoftengotintofistfightsasayoungboy.HepickedupEnglishonhisownbyactingasatourguideforforeignvisitorsinexchangeforlanguagelessons,butbecausehehaddifficult
