The CLIMAT data are monthly CLIMAT reports received through

7、 GTS from 1300-1400 stations in the world. Climatological normals are calculated from statistics of 1961-90. Each file name consists of 8 characters, and each character obeys the following rules. 1st-6th character (element) CLIMAT 7th-8th characters (month number) month number(01-12) Each file conta

10、NSO. The source of data, the calculating method and the area of each index are described here.The data files in the directory /DATA/GPV/INDEX/ are the text files. The 1st line in each file show you an element name and the 2nd a name of the area and latitudes and longitudes of the boundary. The subse

11、quent lines indicate the data for each year, from January to December.1. High-cloud amount index (File name : HCLD-*)This index represents the strength of convective activity and becomes positive (negative) when the activity is above (below) normal.High-cloud amount is observed by GMS (HIMAWARI). In

12、dices of the high-cloud amount are the regional mean anomalies normalized by dividing by their standard deviations. The base period for normal is 1978-90. When the index is negative, trading wind is weaker than normal and the features together with the El Nino ev

14、ent are shown. The sources of data are the monthly mean sea level pressure reported by CLIMAT messages from Tahiti in the South Pacific and Darwin in Australia. The calculating method is as follows.The index is defined as the normalized sea level pressure anomaly difference between Tahiti and Darwin

15、, in which their anomalies are normalized by dividing their anomalies by their standard deviations. The base period for normal is 1961-90. The definite formula for SOI is SOI = ANM(Ps(T)/SD(Ps(T) - ANM(Ps(D)/SD(Ps(D) / SD(SOI), where Ps(A) is the sea level pressure for the point A, ANM(B) and SD(B)

16、are anomaly and standard deviation of the element B, and T and D represent Tahiti and Darwin, respectively.3. Sea Surface Temperature Anomaly ( File name : SSTA* ) JMA define 4 regions to monitor El Nino.
