2、 books describing all the color things in the nature and in the society as well. So colors are not only full of our lives,but also play a very important role in our lives. People all are relevant to colors, no matter in vision or emotion. Colors are abundant in both Chinese and English, such as blac

3、k, white, red, yellow, green, blue, etc. The view and cognition of different national people toward color are much alike. They also have many common associations in color and color terms. However, Language can embody its culture. There is also difference between English and Chinese in how to express

4、 with color. And with the development of internationalization,color words have more connotative meanings. Thus, while translating and speaking the color words, we should pay attention its special meaning in culture. Therefore, basic color terms ,such as black and黑, white and白, red and紅, yellow and黃,

5、 green and綠, blue and藍, purple and紫,have heavy weight in our human languages. Basic color terms, as a group of culture-loaded words, express and reflect different cultural diversities in some perspectives.The meanings of color terms to the different nations are different because of their different c

6、ustoms, way of thinking, environments, psychology and religious belief, etc. All this makes the understanding of color terms are different in different nations. Wassily Kandinsky,the founder of modern abstractionist art, pointed out in his book On the Spiritual Art that color has an effect on a pers

7、ons affection squarely. According to what have mentioned above,colors play an indispensable part in our life and its an effective way to learn the different culture and translation between English and Chinese to study their color words.研究內(nèi)容:The paper on an analysis of cultural connotations of Chines

8、e and English color words will be discuss from the following aspects:First of all,it gives a brief introduction to the topic and the background information of cultural connotations of Chinese and English color words. On the bases of this general information, the purpose and methodology of this paper

9、 will be stated. According to differences and similarities between western culture and Chinese culture,and with the development of internationalization,color words contain different connotative meanings. The purpose of this paper is to analyze thecultural connotations of Chinese and English color wo

10、rds to know more differences and similarities of color words in different culture,which is helpful for the translation between languages.The body part can be divided into three parts. The first part probes into language and culture. It gives the relationship between language and culture that languag

11、e and culture rely on each other and have an effect on each other. The language is an important carrier of culture,as well as a part of culture,but its content and form are influenced and restricted by culture. Then it gives something about colors and culture and it will observe from two parts. Firs

12、t, it gives the definition and relationship of color and basic color terms. Then, it gives the relationship of basic color words and culture, which is very important, and in different culture, its basic color terms are different in some way. And it will give some example of the basic color words. Su

13、ch as black and黑, white and白, red and紅, yellow and黃, green and綠, blue and藍, purple and紫. With the development of intercultural communication, I believe people will know the cultural connotation of color words better.In the second part, the cultural connotations of color terms in English and Chinese

14、will be explored from seven basic color terms, and they are black and黑, white and白, red and紅, yellow and黃, green and綠, blue and藍, purple and紫respectively .Color terms imply different meanings in different countries. The preferences towards different colors can show a nations aesthetic perception to

15、some extent. It will start with black and黑.The concerned meanings of black in both eastern and western culture are nearly the same. It symbolizes ferocity, seriousness, horror, death and blackness. But there are also differences in connotative meanings. For example, In Chinese, one use“黑心腸” to descr

16、ibe someone who is venomous. “黑幕” means frightful secret, inside story. In English, “black in the face” and “to look black at someone” are used to say people who are very angry. White and白 is the next. The associated meaning of white is close in English and Chinese culture, it points clean and pure

17、or innocent. But the "white" in Chinese is unequal to "white" in English. In China, its the symbol of death, depression, failure and threat. In west, white equals to chastity and naivete. Then is red and紅. No matter in China or English-speaking nations, the red all symbolizes ple

18、ased celebration and happiness. But its connotative meaning is very different. For Chinese, its the symbol of luck, happiness, success and festival, on the contrary, Its the symbol of atrocity, danger, violence, and debauchery in west. Yellow and黃 in ancient China is a kind of noble color, but nowad

19、ays, yellow is associated with sex. In the west, when it comes to yellow, people will think of the yellow clothe which Jew wore. So it implies abjection. Green in Chinese tradition contains two meanings.One denotes bravery as well as rudeness, the other means inferior and humble. But in west, green

20、represents peace, hope, energy, youth, novelty and happiness.Blue and藍 has scarce symbolic meaning in Chinese culture. It denotes gloomy emotion in the west and it also associate with high social position or being aristocratic. The last but not least is purple and紫. Purple is often associated with h

21、igh rank or station in general or imperial or regal rank or power in particular. The purple refers to royal or very noble rank , as in Those born to the purple are destined to live in the public eye.In the third part, the focus would be put on the reasons for similarities and differences of cultural

22、 connotations of Chinese and English color words. It starts with the reason from the perspective of religion, then from the perspective of politics, besides is from the perspective of economy, and the last is from the perspective of social background. As we all know,all these factors constitute a co

23、mplex environment, and a part of culture. As a result, all these will bring up the influences on these basic color terms, and give them some special new meanings. That is a big progress to our social development. The last part of this paper would be conclusion. The paper has first explained language

24、 and culture and then discussed the cultural connotations of seven basic color terms in English and Chinese. And the last explained four reasons for similarities and differences of cultural connotations of Chinese and English color words. From the study of them, we get to know that color words imply
