1、Report 一 Preface Nowadays, linguistics become more and more popular, Many universities also preference to the lingusitics, it also attracts many students attention. I am one of them. As we learning the linguistics ,most of us cosider the terminology as the most difficult part to learn ,there are man
2、y items in the different fields of the linguistics,however, although we have many books to introduce about the linguistics,none of the book give us a clearly definition of those terminology. So through this investigation ,we want to see how many students inclined to need such kind of the dictionary.
3、 二 QuestionnaireIn order to see the students needs and wants,I made an investigate among twenty English major students,both of them are sophomore and junior studnets ,each of them answered my question individually,then I made a comparison between them ,then I get the conclusion as follow:(1)Question

5、ns are very important among my questionaires,so I focuse on them ,according to these five tables ,we also can see many problems of our learning ,it also assist us in how to compile a useful dictionary for the students ,at least we know students are really need such kind of the dictionary. Firstly ,f
6、rom the table 1 we are easily to see the importance of the lingustics study nowadays, when I talk about linguistics with them,most of them can tell me something relative to the lingustics ,during our investigation ,I find most students like to learn the Pragmatics ,Semantics, Language learning and S
7、econd language Acquistion.They all confused about the Syntax and the Schools of the Modern Linguistics .This also help us to get a general idea about our terminology dictionary ,at least ,we know which part of the lingustics we shold pay more attention to. Secondly , although many students like to l
8、earn the lingusitcs subject ,when I mention the terminology of the linguistics “deep structure,surface structure” all of them feel so confused about it ,they tell me sometimes they can understand the theory of those items ,however, they really dont know how to use their own words to expain it ,they
9、are also dont know whether they understand it or not .They always talk with each other of this problem .They even complain that they have many linguistics book ,but seldom of them can give them clearly definiton of those puzzle terminology .Their complaint also tell us that if now we can publish suc
10、h kind of the dictionary ,we will get a lot of market shares. Thirdly ,during our conversation ,I mention the lingustics terminology dictonary to them and ask them whether they need it or not,almost all of them tell me they really want such kind of the dictionary ,they also describe that dictionary
11、to me “ a portable dictionary which can cover the terminology both in the Lingustics.A Course Book (胡壯麟,語言學(xué)教程) and A new concise course on lingustics for students of English (簡明語言學(xué)教程,戴煒棟) This is also give us an general outline of our dictionary ,we know which book we should concentrate on , we also
12、 reduce our range of the lingustics terminology choosing,because they already tell us those books they always used.Fouthly, this table is definitely show us what we should do for our dictionary ,it also offer us a huge challenging ,we are not only use the concise words ,but also need to have our own
13、 distinctive features ,just like if we want to explain the arbirtrariness of the language ,we can use the picture to help the students get that point .房子 (漢語)House(英語) Arbirtrariness of lingustics (韓語) I think if we can add more pictures in order to help us to remember the boring items of the lingus
14、tics ,because all the linguistics items seems boring to us ,so we can make it very dynamics.Fifthly, many students like studying linguistics,but some of them still because of the examation to learn the course ,this let me feel upset ,we are not only because of the exam to learn ,so this is also anot
15、her big challenging for us ,we should find a correct way which can really help student like to learn this subject.Another factor is that for this dictionary we should add more distinguish items ,just like the difference between “narrow and broad transcription” “creole and pidgin.” Because students a
16、lways confused by these words. Through this five tables ,we can easily see that linguistics terminology dictionary is really need at hand, the only problem is in which way we can really fulfil students need ,and also encourage them like to learn linguistics. 四 Problems I didnt study linguistics unti
17、l last year ,at first I also consider linguistics as a boring course,I couldnt understand those confused terminology of the linguistics such as “categoral component,concrolled language”. I even couldnt find those items in the book ,at that time , I really want to buy a terminology dictionary ,but I
18、cant find it .Through this investigation ,many students also complain about it ,because they can find a linguistics book easily ,however they also couldnt buy such kind of the dictionary ,sometimes they couldnt distinguish the “narrow transcription and broad transciption” ,if we have this dictionary
19、 ,definitely it will really benefit for us . Otherwise ,I also find some problems :l All the books give us a general definiton of those items ,they didnt describe them in easy words ,or didnt give a concrete ideas ,so students always cofused about it .l The author pay more attention to the theories
20、,just like TG grammars ,but they didnt care about the terminology matters.l Many students can understand the theory ,if we ask more specific fators ,they couldnt explain it or they even dont know why ?l Another important matter is when students face the puzzle terminology ,they didnt consult to the
21、teacher or find it in the internet ,they just give up ,then to learn the other parts of the linguistics , according to this process ,I am sure all the students finally will relinquish linguistics.l The last one but not the least one, nowadays ,linguistics plays very important role in the postgraduat
22、e examation ,if students didnt learn it very well ,that will direct effect their score ,maybe one book( lingusitcs terminology dicitonary) couldnt help them a lot , at least it can give them an outline of the linguistics.五 ConclusionThe main purpose of this investigation is to investigate whether st
23、udents really need a new dictionary of linguistics or not ? If we compile such kind of dictionry will we have much market shares? After I finish this investigation , many problems has appeared ,on the one hand ,it really strengthen my determination to compile such kind of dictionary ,because during
24、my investigation ,many students ask me “ when the dictionary will publish?” From their words ,I know they really want to learn more knowledge about it ,I still remember when I prepare for my postgraduation ,I also want to buy such kind of dictionary (linguistic terminology dictionary) badly, however
25、 ,we couldnt buy it ,so it will assist many students both in their study and exam. I also list some features of this dictionary:1. The range of this dictionary is mainly cover with those two books we mentioned it before ,because many universites students use it ,the terminology of those two books al
26、so can mutual benefit for each other ,because “A new concise course on lingustics for students of English (簡明語言學(xué)教程,戴煒棟) has coverd more fields of the linguistics which we couldnt find it in the Lingustics.A Course Book (胡壯麟,語言學(xué)教程) .2.
