文檔簡介

第十周天天清OneWhen I first entered university, my aunt, who was an English professor, gave me a new English dictionary. I was 1 to see that it was an English-English dictionary, also known as a monolingual單語的dictionary. 2 it was a dictionary intended for non-native learners, none of my classmates had one 3 , to be honest, I found it extremely 4 to use at first. I would look up words in the dictionary and 5 not fully understand the meanings. I was used to the 6_ bilingual雙語的 dictionaries, in which the word are 7 both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why my aunt 8 to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for three years, I 9 that monolingual dictionaries are10 in learning a foreign language. As I found out, there is,11 , often no perfect equivalence(對應(yīng))between two12 in two languages. My aunt even goes so far as to甚至 13 that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you the14 meaning of a word in English!15 , she insisted that I read the definition(定義)of a word in a monolingual dictionary16_ I wanted to get a better understanding of its meaning.17 , I have come to see what she meant.Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This dictionary uses a(n)18_ number of words, around 2,000, in its definitions. When I read these definitions, I am 19 exposed to(接觸)the basic words and learn how they are used to explain objects and ideas. 20 this, I can express myself more easily in English.TwoIt was a busy morning, about 8:30, when an elderly gentleman in his 80s came to the hospital. I heard him saying to the nurse that he was in a hurry for all appointment(約會)at 9:30.The nurse had him take a21 in the waiting area, 22 him it would be at least 40 minutes 23 someone would be able to see him. I saw him24 his watch and decided, since I was 25 busymy patient didnt26 at the appointed hour, I would examine his wound. While taking care of his wound, I asked him if he had another doctors appointment. The gentleman said no and told me that he27 to go to the nursing home to eat breakfast with his28 . He told me that she had been 29 for a while and that she had a special disease. I asked if she would be 30_ if he was a bit late. He replied that she 31 knew who he was, that she had not been able to32 him for five years now. I was 33 , and asked him, “And you 34 go every morning, even though she doesnt know who you are?”He smiled and said, “She doesnt know me, but I know who she is.” I had to hold back35 as he left. Now I36 that in marriages, true love is37 of all that is. The happiest people dont 38 have the best of everything; they just 39 the best of everything they have. 40 isnt about how to live through the storm, but how to dance in the rain.第十周天天清One1.
