But he was quickly caught by officers and arrested,Verheij said.Liz Taylor remains hospitalizedLOS ANGELESHeart trouble is keeping Elizabeth Taylor hospitalized in Los Angeles for some time, but her publicist says the 78yearold actress is OK and has been visiting with family and friends.Taylors spokeswoman Sally Morrison said in a statement Tuesday that the twotime Oscar winner is comfortable at CedarsSinai Medical Center and“there has been steady improvement in her condition” since she was admitted last week.Taylor is being treated for symptoms of heart failure, a condition she revealed in November 2004.“Her medical team is satisfied by her progress to date, and it is hoped and expected that this will continue over the next few days. For now, she will remain under their care in the hospital for continued monitoring,” Morrison said. “Friends and fans around the world should be convinced that Elizabeth Taylor is in good health and receiving the best possible care from her skilled and devoted doctors and nurses.”Morrison described Taylors condition as stable but offered no other details. Japan halts(暫停) whale hunt after chase by protestersTOKYOJapan has halted its annual Antarctic whale hunt following protests from a campaign group. Activists from the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society,a USbased environmental group, have been chasing the Japanese fishing ship.Commercial whaling was banned in 1986 but Japan uses a regulation permitting hunting for scientific research.Iceland and Norway have claimed official objections to the ban and continue to hunt commercially.“Putting safety as a priority, the ship has halted scientific whaling for now. We are currently considering what to do,” Tatsuya Nakaoku, an official at the fisheries agency, told Reuters news agency. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society says one of its boats has been blocking the ship loading ramp(斜梯) ,preventing any hunted whales from being loaded on to the ship. “Every whale saved is a victory to us, so weve gotten a lot of victories down here this year,” Sea Shepherd captain Paul Watson told Reuters news agency by satellite phone from the Steve Irwin ship. 1The underlined part“the long arm of the law”refers to _ in Amsterdam.A. a travel agency B. a policemanC. a police station D. a police spokeswoman答案:C. C.2What can we know about Elizabeth Taylor from the news?A. B(南京二模,B)“Choo,Choo!”Here comes the Chunnel train. Get aboard if you want to learn more about this underground transportation system. This is an unusual form of transportation, because it is a tunnel that trains travel through and not an actual form of transportation. The Chunnel is actually the English nickname for the Channel Tunnel. In French,it is called le tunnel sous la Manche. It is a rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover. It connects Cheriton in Kent, England with Sangatte in northern France. It is the second longest rail tunnel in the world.Did you know that the British and the French had a race while they were building the Chunnel? The race was to see who could get to the middle of the tunnel first. The British won by a little bit. It took 15,000 workers over seven years to dig the tunnel. The tunnel was finished in 1994.The completed Chunnel cost about $21 billion. But it all paid off, because it became very popular, very quick. Millions of people use it. Now it is getting even more popular. There are three complete tunnels in the Chunnel. The two outside ones are the passenger trains. The small inner one is a guidance train. The guidance train is not used for transportation. Each track is exactly parallel to each other. There are four different train systems in the Chunnel. The Eurostar is a high speed passenger service that connects London, Paris, Brussels and Lille. The Eurotunnel shuttle is a rail ferry service. These shuttles carry cars and vans. These are railcars that allow drivers to drive their vehicles on and off. There are also two Eurotunnel goods service trains. Now you know more about the Chunnel. Everybody off, this is the last stop. London; Paris B. Cheriton; SangatteC. Lille; Brussels D. And in this spirit of observing traditional rule, I shall quote Dr Johnsons famous comment that “When two English meet, their first talk is of the weather”, and point out that this observation is as accurate now as it was over two hundred years ago. This, however, is the point at which most people either stop, or try, and fail, to come up with a convincing explanation for the English “addiction” to the weather. They fail because their premise(前提) is mistaken: they assume that our conversations about the weather are conversations about the weather. In other words, they assume that we talk about the weather because we have a keen interest in the subject. Most of them then try to figure out what it is about the English weather that is so fascinating.Bill Bryson, for example, concludes that the English weather is not at all fascinating, and that our“addiction” to it is therefore very difficult to explain: “To an outsider, the most striking thing about the English weather is that there is not very much of it. All those phenomena that elsewhere give nature an edge of excitement, unpredictability and dangertornados, monsoons, hailstormsare almost wholly unknown in the British Isles.”Jeremy Paxman takes offence at Brysons comments and argues that the English weather is truly fascinating:Bryson misses the point. The interest is less in the phenomena themselves, but in uncertainty. one of the few things you can say about England with absolute certainty is that it has a lot of weather. It may not include tropical cyclones but life at the edge of an ocean and the edge of a continent means you can never be entirely sure what youre going to get.My research has convinced me that both Bryson and Paxman are missing the point, which is that our conversations about the weather are not really about the weather at all:English weatherspeak is a form of code, developed to help us overcome our natural reserve (含蓄) and actually talk to each other. Everyone knows, for example, that “Nice day, isnt it?”, “Oh, isnt it cold?”; and other variations on the theme are not requests for weather data: they are greetings or conversationstarters. In other words, English weatherspeak is a form of “cleaning talk”the human equivalent of what is known as “social cleaning” among our primate(靈長類旳)cousins, where they spend hours cleaning each others fur, even when they are perfectly clean, as a means of social connection. 8According to the author, most peoples explanations for the English love for weather talk are _.A. scientific B. incorrect C. fascinating D. accurate答案:B. 9As is stated in the passsage, most people try to find out _.A. why the English weather is so uniqueB. whether the English enjoy their weatherC. why the English are so interested in the topic of weatherD. whether the English really talk about weather when they do so答案:C. 10In Bill Brysons opinion, the English “addiction” to their weather is _.A. understandable B. convincingC. respectable D. unreasonable答案:D. 由第3段首句旳“it is therefore very difficult to explain”可推知答案.11Disapproving of Bill Brysons opinion,Jeremy Paxman argues that _.A. the English talk about their weather because it is unpredictableB. the English dont talk about weather as often as the outsiders thinkC. the English weather can be as exciting as anywhere elsesD. the English weather talk is merely a form of small talk答案:A. 由倒數(shù)第3段旳“Jeremy Paxman.argues that the English weather is truly fascinating”和倒數(shù)第2段第2句but in uncertainty可推知答案.12According to the author, English weatherspeak is similar to primates social cleaning in that they are both _.Aways of greetingBmeans social connectionCfascinating topics between peopleDphenomena difficult to understand to outsiders答案:B. D)The Child Ego StateThe Child ego state is a set of behaviors, thoughts and feelings which are replayed from our own childhood.Perhaps the boss calls us into his or her office, we may immediately get a churning in our stomach and wonder what we have done wrong. If this were explored we might remember the time the head teacher called us in to tell us off. Of course, not everything in the Child ego state is negative. We might go into someones house and smell a lovely smell and remember our grandmothers house when we were little, and all the same warm feelings we had at six years of age may come flooding back. The Child ego states are constantly being updated. For example, we may meet someone who gives us the permission we needed as a child, and did not get,to be fun and joyous. We may well use that person in our imagination when we are stressed to resist our old ways of thinking that we must work longer and longer hours to keep up with everything. We might ask ourselves“I wonder what X would say now. ”Then on hearing the new permissions to relax and take some time out,do just that and then return to the work renewed and ready for the challenge. Afterwards, rather than blaming ourselves for what we did or did not do, what tends to happen is that we automatically start to give ourselves new permissions and take care of ourselves.Alternatively,we might have had an extremely unpleasant experience yesterday which goes into the Child ego state as an antique memory that stands in the way of our growth. Positive experiences will also go into the Child ego state as antique memories. The positive experiences can then be drawn on to remind us that positive things do happen. The process of analyzing personality in terms of ego states is called structural analysis. It is important to remember that ego states do not have an existence of their own. They are concepts to enable understanding. Therefore it is important to say“I want some fun” rather than“My Child wants some fun”. We may be in our Child ego state when we say this,_but saying“I” reminds us to take responsibility for our actions. 13The writer uses two examples in Paragraph 2 in order to _.A. prove the Child ego state is negativeB. explain why we become nervousC. support the idea in Paragraph 1D. introduce the point of Paragraph 3答案:C. C.14By asking“I wonder what X would say now” ,we intend to _.A. blame ourselves B. avoid stressC. keep up with everything D. accept challenges答案:B. 由第3段中間旳“We may well use that person. Then on hearing the new permissions to relax and take some time out.” 15According to the passage, the Child ego state _.A. exists in ones childhood B. shows ones wisdomC. limits ones thoughts D. influences ones actions答案:D. 16The underlined word“this” in the last paragraph refers to _.A. “I want some fun”B. “My Child wants some fun”C. the Child ego state D. structural analysis答案:A. 答案在于文章最后兩句,由尾句中旳but saying “I” reminds us.可知代詞this指代旳是上句旳“I want some fun”而不是“My Child wants some fun”.E(東城練習(xí)二,D)People have wondered for a long time how their personalities and behavior are formed. It is not easy to explain why one person is intelligent and another is not, or why one is cooperative and another is competitive.Social scientists are of course extremely interested in these types of questions. They want to explain why we possess certain characteristics and exhibit certain behavior. There are no clear answers yet, but two distinct schools of thought on the matter have developed. As one might expect, the two approaches are very different from each other, and there is a great deal of debate between proponents of each theory. The controversy is often conveniently referred to as “nature and nurture”Those who support the“nature” side of the conflict believe that our personalities and behavior patterns are largely determined by biological factors. That our environment has little, if anything, to do with our abilities, characteristics and behavior is central to this theory. Taken to an extreme, this theory states that our behavior is predetermined to such a great degree that we are almost completely governed by our instincts(本能)Proponents of the“nurture” theory, or, as they are often called, behaviorists, claim that our environment is more important than our biologically based instincts in determining how we will act. A behaviorist, B. F. Skinner, sees humans as beings whose behavior is almost completely shaped by their surroundings. The behaviorists view of the human being is quite mechanistic. They state that, like machines, humans respond to environmental stimuli (刺激) as the basis of their behavior.Socially and politically, the consequences of these two theories are farreaching. In the US ,for example, blacks often score below whites on standardized intelligence tests. This leads some“nature” proponents to conclude that blacks are genetically lower in status than whites. Behaviorists, on the contrary, say that the differences in scores are due to the fact that blacks are often robbed of many of the educational and other environmental advantages that whites enjoy, and that, as a result, they do not develop the same responses that whites do. Neither of these theories can yet fully explain human behavior. In fact, it is quite likely that the key to our behavior lies somewhere between these two extremes and that the controversy will continue for a long time is certain. 17This passage is mainly concerned with _.A. relation between personality and behaviorB. relation between behavior and environmentC. different accounts of patterns of human behaviorD. different theories of the formation of human behavior答案:D. D.18The underlined word“proponents” in Paragraph 2 means _.A. creators B. advisorsC. advocates D. judges答案:C. 19In Paragraph 5, the author mainly writes about _.A. the considerable influence of the two theoriesB. differences between the blackes and whites C. racial discrimination in the United StatesD. different responds to intelligence tests答案:A. A.20Whats the authors purpose
