We will take care of you.You guys might have noticed that I do not normally give my speech a title, but after thinking of Vickys many years of services with our Department, I decide to have a title for my todays talk to highlight my message, and that is “Born to Help People”.The title reflects who Vicky is. She is the kind of human being who is born to help others.We are gathering here today to celebrate Vickys contributions to the organization, to congratulate on her retirement, and to wish her all the best as she turns to a new chapter of her life.So let me skip her childhood and teenage life stories, and fast forward to the beginning of your career.“That may be her best part of her life” one audience said.Very likely you are right, but I will leave that to Vicky to share with you.Vicky started to work with this Department back in the early 90s as a summer student.By the way, how many of you here entered in this organization as a student, please raise your hands.1,2,3,4,5,6,7, wow, thank you.We all know that at least in our Department, summer students usually just perform support assistants duties. However, when Vicky started as a student, within 6 months, she was doing a caseworkers work while still as a student. Thats not a common practice in this organization. It tells us a lot about Vicky: she had the skills, the knowledge and the capacity to serve the residents of the great City and the public.Amazing.When we nominate our co-workers for an award due to their excellent quality services, innovation, leadership, etc, we say they go beyond and above.I would say that during Vickys entire career, she not only go beyond and above. She was even taking a risk of losing her job to help others.In the year of 1995, just before Christmas time, December 23rd, Vickys co-worker was off that day, but his phone kept ringing, and ringing. Vickys intuition and a sense of public servants responsibility told her that there may be some kind of urgency. So Vicky took the call.Not to her surprise. The resident at another end of the phone was crying because she did not receive the Christmas Gift Box for her kids.Christmas was just around the corner, there was not enough time to trace or re-send the gift box to this family. So Vicky decided to help the resident: asking the family to wait in the nearby gas station after work, and gave money the family, which is prohibited by our protocol. I tell you now because Vicky does not care anymore for the obvious reason.You may think this is too good to be true. I have a witness right here.Tony, is this a true story?“Yes, it is, I still remember it, I was with my mom back then”Thank you Tony, I am glad I have you here today.The vision of our Department is to help residents to live their best lives. As a caseworker, Vicky always sticks to Toronto Public Service Values, helps residents to develop their full potentials, and moves them forward.I received a phone call the other day from a local office where Vicky worked, stating that one of the residents wanted to pass the message on to Vicky, thank her for her assistance as he found his dream job due to Vickys help.This is just one of many success stories that Vicky helped our residents to achieve their goals.Vicky was born to help people. She brings passion to her career. She takes ownership for what she does. She feels proud of serving the public. Her energy, her enthusiasm, her passion has always been making positive impact on both workplace and the community.Vickys dedication and commitment to the Public Service has also had a positive influence on family members.I remember that I met Tony for the first time about 4 years ago in front of the City Hall. We talked a lot, right Tony?“Yes, we did”But to be honest, I forgot most of what we talked about.However, one thing I still remember, and will never forget is that you said with pride: “ I am proud of the fact that my mom works for the City government, she is a dedicated public servant and she serves the public well.”“Yes, that is true, I said that”Thank you Tony.Vicky was sent to a local office for job shadowing for 3 days last week. We had a long conversation about it this Monday. She was excited all the time talking about her experience at the local office: how she helped the residents, how she was making a difference in peoples life.What I saw during our meeting was her passion to serve the public.And I used the last opportunity to ask her: if let you work at the local office, will you change your mind not to retire? And she said “No”.Thats ok. This is a perfect ending: she started at a local office, and ends in the local office.After today, Vicky will have no 9 5 schedule, but will have the freedom to say he
