1、 The disadvantages and advantages of stressModern society is fast paced and daily life has a great deal of work and study. Therefore, there are a great deal of stress appeared, such as job pressure for workers, study pressure for students, economic pressure for families and people who have responsib

2、ility to society. However, stress has both negative and positive influences. This essay will try to demonstrate the disadvantages and advantages of stress.There are two main disadvantages of stress. One of the main disadvantages is it could lead to health problems. That is, stress could bring about

3、both physical and psychological diseases, according to Edworthy (2000), “high blood pressure, heart disease, asthma and ulcers, and unless the pressure is removed it will ultimately lead to death”. For example, especially when people have difficult job, they stay in a harmful and poor environment. T

4、hese people may lack sleep, often have irregular life-styles, and as a result, they could get diseases easily. Peoples physical health deterioration and their psychological problems may become unstable conditions which affect families and society.Another disadvantage is that people who are under str

5、ess tend to have unstable personal behaviors. In other words, when people have pressures, they may choose certain activities to relieve stress. However, there are unstable personal behaviors could be chosen, such as overeating, drinking, smoking and gambling (Zellner et al., 2006; Bergevin et al., 2

6、006). These activities are harmful and they could bring crises in families which are under pressures. In addition, criminal activities tend to be chosen when people have excessive stress. For example, it is possible some people may choose criminal assault to female after they suffer posttraumatic st

7、ress disorder (Dancu, Riggs, Hearst-Ikeda, Shoyer, & Foa, 1996). Therefore, stress is bad for life and society.Stress has disadvantages, however it could has advantages. The first advantage is that stress could allow people work hard and efficiently. People tend to concentrate on something when they

8、 are under stress. For instance, students probably spend more time on studying if they have exams, especially, at the end of their subjects. This can be illustrated by the fact that near exams the main library becomes more crowded than at other times. In addition to this, it is possible that workers

9、 may work hard when they have difficult job. These facts show that stress could have positive influence on people.Another advantage with stress is that it could allow people reach remarkable achievements and hardships could make people more active. For example, Karl Marxs study area was unacceptable

10、 when he was conducting his research. However, this difficult situation brought him enthusiasm about his work. Finally, he completed Das Kapital. Another example is, Ludwig Van Beethoven who was deaf. Incredibly, he became an outstanding musician. Thus, it can be seen that people could be encouraged

11、 when they are under stress.This essay has argued both the negative and positive influences of stress. In conclusion, it may be argued that, stress could cause some health issues and improper behaviors (Edworthy, 2000; Zellner et al., 2006; Bergevin et al., 2006). On the other hand, stress could bri

12、ng about some positive influence on people, such as allowing people work hard and achieve success. It seems that the advantages of stress are greater than the disadvantages. At the same time, people should attempt to control stress at a reasonable and appropriate level so that it can play an active
