themselvesashumanbeingstoarousethepityofpassers-by.Butrealtramps

arenotbeggars.Theyhavenothingtosellandrequirenothingfromothers.In

seekingindependence,theydonotsacrificetheirhumandignity.Atrampmay

askyouformoney,buthewillneveraskyoutofeelsorryforhim.Hehas

deliberatelychosentoleadthelifeheleadsandisfullyawareofthe

consequences.Hemayneverbesurewherethenextmealiscomingfrom,but

heisfreefromthethousandsofanxietieswhichafflictotherpeople.Hisfew

materialpossessionsmakeitpossibleforhimtomovefromplacetoplacewith

據(jù)說每個(gè)人都靠出售某種東西來維持生活。根據(jù)這種說法,教師靠賣知識為生,哲學(xué)家

靠賣智慧為生,牧師靠賣精神安慰為生。雖然物質(zhì)產(chǎn)品的價(jià)值可以用金錢來衡量,但要估算

別人為我們?yōu)樗峁┑姆?wù)的價(jià)值卻是極其困難的。有時(shí),我們?yōu)榱送炀壬?,愿意付出?/p>

Ihavealwaysregardedthecountryassomethingyoulookatthroughatrain

window,orsomethingyouoccasionalvisitduringtheweekend.Mostofmy

friendsliveinthecity,yettheyalwaysgointorapturesatthemerementionof

thecountry.Thoughtheyextolthevirtuesofthepeacefullife,onlyoneof

themhasevergonetoliveinthecountryandhewasbackintownwithinsix

months.Evenhestilllivesundertheillusionthatcountrylifeissomehow

superiortotownlife.Heisforevertalkingaboutthefriendlypeople,theclean

atmosphere,theclosenesstonatureandthegentlepaceofliving.Nothingcan

becompared,hemaintains,withthefirstcockcrow,thebvitteringofbirdsat

dawn,thesightoftherisingsunglintingonthetreesandpastures.Thisidyllic

pastoralsceneisonlypartofthepicture.Myfriendfailstomentionthelong

andfriendlesswintereveningsinfrontoftheTV—virtuallytheonlyformof

entertainment.Hesaysnothingaboutthepoorselectionofgoodsintheshops,

oraboutthoseunfortunatepeoplewhohavetotravelfromthecountrytothe

cityeverydaytogettowork.Whypeoplearepreparedtotolerateafour-hour

journeyeachdayforthedubiousprivilegeoflivinginthecountryisbeyond

me.Theycouldbesavedsomuchmiseryandexpenseiftheychosetolivein

thecitywheretheyrightlybelong.

Ifyoucandowithoutthefewpastoralpleasuresofthecountry,youwillfind

thecitycanprovideyouwiththebestthatlifecanoffer.Youneverhaveto

travelmilestoseeyourfriends.Theyinvariablylivenearbyandarealways

availableforaninformalchatoranevening'sentertainment.Someofmy

acquaintancesinthecountrycomeuptotownonceortwiceayeartovisitthe

theatreasaspecialtreat.Forthemthisisamajoroperationwhichinvolves

arriveatyourdestinationalmostexhausted.Longcarjourneysareevenless

travelfairlysafelyathighspeeds,butmoreoftenthannot,thegreaterpartof

thejourneyisspentonroadswithfewservicestationsandtoomuchtraffic.By

comparison,ferrytripsorcruisesofferagreatvarietyofcivilizedcomforts.You

canstretchyourlegsonthespaciousdecks,playgames,meetinterestingpeople

andenjoygoodfood—alwaysassuming,ofcourse,thattheseaiscalm.Tfitis

not,andyouarelikelytogetseasick,noformoftransportcouldbeworse.Even

ifyoutravelinidealweather,seajourneystakealongtime.Relativelyfew

peoplearepreparedtosacrificeuptoathirdoftheirholidaysforthepleasure

oftravellingbysea.

Aeroplaneshavethereputationofbeingdangerousandevenhardened

travellersareintimidatedbythem.Theyalsohavethedisadvantageofbeingthe

mostexpensiveformoftransport.Butnothingcanmatchthemforspeedand

comfort.Travellingataheightof30,000feet,farabovetheclouds,andatover

500milesanhourisanexhilaratingexperience.Youdonothavetodeviseways

oftakingyourmindoffthejourney,foranaeroplanegetsyoutoyour

destinationrapidly.Forafewhours,yousettlebackinadeeparmchairtoenjoy

theflight.Therealescapistcanwatchafreefilmshowandsipchampagneon
