throughtheStockExchange,inordertoearnprofitsfortheirpolicy-holders,share-

holdersandpensioners.HowIstheStockExchangeDifferentfromOtherMarkets?A

marketisaplacewherepeoplemeettobuyandsell.Mostmarketsdealingoodsthat

haveapracticaluse-theproducersontheonehand,provideasteadysupplyofthegoods

traded,andtheconsumers,ontheother,provideasteadydemand.TheStockExchange

dealswithadifferentsortofcommodity.Thegoodsonsale,inthemselves,haveno

intrinsicvalue.Stockandsharecertificatesareevidenceofyourstakeinacompany,or,

inthecaseof"Gilts",thatyouhavelentmoneytothegovernmentbybuyinggovernment

stock.Theyareimportantdocumentsthatshouldbekeptcarefully,buttheyarenotuseful

inthesensethatfoodstuffsorrawmaterialsfbrindustryarc.Thereisafurther

complicationbecause,howevermanysharesacompanymayhaveinissue,theyail

belongtosomebody.Howthencanthestockmarketensurethattherearealwaysshares

availabletobebought,andbuyersavailabletobuythem?Howcantherebeamarketat

all,ifthepublicallwanttobuyatthesametime?Stockexchangesinothercountries

havefounddifferentsolutionstotheproblemofprovidingacontinuousandfreemarket

insecurities,withvaryingdegreesofsuccess.InBritain,theessentialfreedomis

providedbyaspecialgroupofStockExchangeMemberFinns,theJobbers,who

constituteauniquefeatureoftheBritishmarketsystem.Inothercountries,Broken

attempttomatchupbuyersandsellerswitheachotherdirectly.Here,theJobbersactas

stallholdersinthemarket.AtthesestallsaBrokercanbuyorsellfbrhisclientwhatever

quantityofshareshewishes.Thereisnoneedtohuntforamatchingamount;theJobber

willprovideone,andchannelingalldealsinthiswayprovidesimmenseflexibility.

UnlikeBrokers,whoareagentsfortheirclientsandarepaidbycommission.Jobbersdeal

asprincipals,buyingandsellingsharesattheirownrisk..WhatIstheHistoryofthestock

Exchange?Dealingsinstocksandsharesbeganwiththemerchantventuresinthe17th

Century.GraduallyaninformalmarketdevelopedaroundthecoffeehousesintheCityof
