intelligencetestandwereratedforsocialmaturity.Next,thechildrenwererandomlyassignedtooneof

fourexperimentalconditions.IXvoweremusicgroups;onereceivedpianolessonsandtheothervoice

lessons.ThethirdgrouptookdramaIcssons-aconditionthatshedlightonwhetherintellectualgains

wereuniquetomusicalexperiences.Thefourthgroup-ano-lessonscontrol-wasofferedmusiclessons

thefollowingyear.After36weeksoflessons,thechildren'sintelligenceandsocialmaturitywere

assessedagain.

Allfourgroupsshowedgainsinintelligence-testperfonmnee,probablybecausetheparticipantshad

justenteredgradeschool,whichusuallyleadstoanincreaseinintelligencetestscores.Butthetwomusic

groupsconsistentlygainedmorethanthecontrolgroups.Theiradvantage,thoughjustafewpoints,

extendedacrossmanymentalabilities,includingverbalandspatialskillsandspeedofthinking.Atthe

sametime,onlythedramagroupimprovedinsocialmaturity.

Insum,active,sustainedmusicalexperiencescanleadtosmallincreasesinintelligenceamong
