AeronauticalRadio,Inc.isacorporationinwhichtheUnitedStatesscheduledairlinesaretheprincipalstockholders.Otherstockholdersincludeavarietyofotherairtransportcompanies,aircraftmanufacturersandnon-U.S.airlines.
ActivitiesofARINCincludetheoperationofanextensivesystemofdomesticandoverseasaeronauticallandradiostations,thefulfillmentofsystemsrequirementstoaccomplishgroundandairbornecompatibility,theallocationandassignmentoffrequenciestomeetthoseneeds,thecoordinationincidenttostandardairbornecommunicationsandelectronicssystemsandtheexchangeoftechnicalinformation.ARINCsponsorstheAirlinesElectronicEngineeringCommittee(AEEC),composedofairlinetechnicalpersonnel.TheAEECformulatesstandardsforelectronicequipmentandsystemsfortheairlines.TheestablishmentofEquipmentCharacteristicsisaprincipalfunctionofthisCommittee.

INTRODUCTION
PurposeofthisReport
Thisdocumentprovidesgeneralandspecificdesignguidanceforthedevelopmentofsoftwaredataloadingequipmentforalltypesofaircraft.ItdefinesaPortableDataLoader(PDL)forcarry-onapplicationsandanAirborneDataLoader(ADL)forinstallationontheairplane.Theprimaryfunctionofthedataloaderisuploadingdataandoperationalsoftwareprogramstoairbornecomputers.Asecondaryfunctionofthedataloaderisdownloadingdatafromairbornecomputers.Thisdocumentdescribesthedesiredcapabilityofdataloadingequipmentandthestandardsnecessarytoensureinterchangeabilityofthestandardizedmassstoragemedium.FormandfitinterchangeabilityisspecifiedandexpectedfortheADL,butnotspecifiedforthePDL.
Thisdocumentdefinesdataloadersdesignedtoloadnewgenerationavionicsequipmentoverahigh-speedinterface.Avionicsequipment,whichisloadableovertheARINC429databus,willcontinuetobeloadedbydataloadersdefinedbyARINCReport615.However,theARINCReport615Adefinitionshouldnotprecludethecombinationofbothdataloadingtypesinonephysicaldataloadershouldthemarketdesiresuchadataloader.
Equipmentmanufacturersshouldnotethatthisdocumentaimstoencouragethemtoproducemaintenance-freehighperformanceequipmentratherthanthatofminimumweightanddimension.Theyareatlibertytoaccomplishthisobjectivebymeansofdesigntechniquestheyconsidertobethemostappropriate,astheircustomersareinterestedprimarilyintheendresultratherthanthemeansemployedtoachieveit.
DocumentConventions
ARINCdocumentsarevoluntarystandardsintendedtoensureinteroperabilityofequipmentindependentofthemanufacturerortheairframeinstallation.Somedataloaderfunctionsdefinedinthisdocumentmustbeimplementedinordertomeetaminimumlevelofcompatibilitybetweenloaders(andothertools)designedtothisstandard,loadablesoftwaredesignedtothisstandard,andsoftwaretransportmediadesignedtothisstandard.
Inthisdocument,“should”isusedtodefineacapabilitythatmustbeimplementedfortheunittomeettheminimumlevelofcompatibilityintendedbythisstandardand“does/is/will”areusedtoexpressastatementoffactbasedonotherrequirements.“May”isusedtoexpressanoptionalcapability.Incaseswherethesecapabilitiesareimplemented,it“should”beimplementedinaspecificmannerdefinedinthisstandard.Otherwiseanincompatibilitymayexistwiththeaircraftorotherinterfacingequipment.
FunctionoftheEquipment
Thedataloaders(bothPDLandADL)shouldbeabletotransferdatabetweenaselectedairbornecomputerandastandardremovablemedia.ThesetransfersshouldoccurviaanEthernetdatabusdefinedinARINCSpecification646.Thetransferofdatafromthedataloadertotheairbornecomputerisreferredtoas“uploading.”Thetransferofdatafromtheairbornecomputertothedataloaderisreferredto
as“downloading.”BothuploadanddownloadcapabilityisdesiredforthePDLandtheADL.
Airlineoperatorsdesireadataloaderthatiscapableofsupportingthenewgenerationofavionicsequipmentthatrequireshigh-speedloading,duetotheincreasedsizeofoperationalprogramsanddatabeingloaded.Thedataloadershouldsupportnewgenerationavionicsequipmentthatisforeseeableovertheoperationallifeoftheairplane.SomeairlineoperatorsmayinstallbothnewgenerationandlegacygenerationequipmentrequiringloadingbyARINC615AandARINC615.TheARINC615Adefinitionshouldnotprecludethecombinationofbothdataloadingtypesinonephysicaldataloadershouldthemarketdesiresuchadataloader.
Protocolfilenamesarecasesensitive.RefertoSection5.1.
COMMENTARY
Theairlineusercommunitysetthedesiredoperationalcapabilityfordataloading.Thefollowingspecificationsshouldbeviewedasminimumcapabilities.Airlineswelcomeadditionalimprovementsprovidingtheyarecost-effective.

PDLDescription
ThePDLshouldbeaportableunithousingallofthecomponents,electroniccircuitry,controls,etc.,incidenttothefunctioningofthesystemwithinaneasilytransportableinstrumentcase.AllcontrolandstatusindicationsshouldbeavailableonthefrontpanelofthePDL.Thisunitisintendedforuseonallavionicsequipmentwithembeddedsoftware.
ThePDLisexpectedtoperformthedataloadingfunctionsdefinedinthisdocument.However,someairlineoperatorsmaydesireamoreelaborateportabledevicethatiscapableofperformingadditionalfunctionssuchasretrievalofmaintenancedatafromARINC604BITEsystemsorARINC624OnboardMaintenanceSystems.ARINCReport644AprovidesguidelinesforthedevelopmentofaPortableMulti-PurposeAccessTerminal(PMAT)thatprovidesadditionalfunctionality.

Thestandardscontainedhereinmaybeappliedtootherequipmentcapableofdataloading,thoughnotspecificallydedicatedtothedataloadingfunction.WhentheADLfunctionisincorporatedintoothersystemslocatedontheairplane,thosesystemsshouldcontainthedigitalinterfacesandprotocolsspecifiedinthisdocumentandsupportthestandardizedmediatypes.
SoftwareloadsshouldbecompliantwithARINCReport665,LoadableSoftwareStandards.
Reliability
Theanticipateduseofthedataloaderdemandstheutmostattentiontotheneedforreliabilityinallphasesofdesign,production,installationandoperationoftheequipment.
COMMENTARY
Thedesignermaybesurprisedtofindnoelaboraterequirementsforreliability.Theairlinesareinamostfortunatepositioninthisregardbecausetheyhavefoundthepressuresofthe“marketplace”exertatrulymeaningfulinfluenceuponthedesignandproductionqualitycontrolnecessarytoachievehighequipmentreliability.
Maintainability
Theequipmentdesignshouldbemodularinconceptandshouldbeassembledtofacilitateshoprepair.Thestackingofindividuallyreplaceablecomponentsshouldbeavoided.Thespacingofcomponentsshouldfacilitateshoprepairandconstructionshouldpermitmoduleorcomponentremovalwithoutinterference.Allmodulesorsubassembliesshould
requirements.
RegulatoryApproval
TheequipmentshouldmeetallapplicableFederalAviationAdministration(FAA),EuropeanJointAviationAuthority(JAA),FederalCommunicationsCommission(FCC),andanyotherairlineregulatoryrequirements.Thisdocumentdoesnotandcannotsetforththespecificrequirementsthatequipmentmustmeettoassureapproval.Suchinformationshouldbeobtainedfromtheregulatoryagenciesthemselves.

Thissectionsetsforththephysicalcriteria,inputandoutputinterfaces,andpowersupplycharacteristicsdesiredforthePortableDataLoader(PDL)andAirborneDataLoader(ADL).
Manufacturersshouldnotethat,althoughthisReportdoesnotprecludetheuseofdifferentinterfaceandinterwiringfeatures,thepracticalproblemofredesigningtoaccommodatesomespecialsystemcouldverywellmaketheuseofthatotherdesignprohibitivelyexpensiveforthecustomer.Theyshouldrecognize,therefore,thepracticaladvantagesofdevelopingequipmentinaccordancewiththestandardssetforthinthisdocument.
AvionicsequipmentintendingtomeettheseinterfacesstandardsmustcomplywithSections5and6ofthisdocumentconcerningthedataloadingprotocolandbusinterface.

ThePDLshouldbedesignedtobeaportableflightlinepieceoftestequipment.AlthoughnorestrictionshavebeenmadeontheactualsizeofthePDL,theusersdesirethatthisunitbeassmallaspossible.Shockabsorbingbumpersorrailscouldbeanattractivefeaturetousersconcernedaboutdurability.AllaccessorycomponentssuchascablesanddisksshouldbecarriedasanintegralpartofthePDLcompletelycontainedwithinthepackagingunit.
ADLPhysicalSize
TheADLshouldbedesignedforcommercialaircraftinstrumentpanelmountingheightandwidthdimensionsfoundinMS25212.Panelheightshouldnotexceed4.5inchesmaximumincludingpowersupply.Anyvibration/shockisolationfeaturesneededtomeetthisapplicationshouldbecontainedwithintheenclosureandnotrequireanyspecialalignmentforinstallation.ADLlengthshouldbelimitedto7.0inchesmaximumfromrailmountingsurfaceoffrontpaneltotherearofthechassisexcludingconnectorprotrusion.
