thegravesandlightincenseinmemoryoftheirancestors.Theylightlampsandplaymusic

becausetheythinkthatthiswillleadtheancestorsbacktoearth.InMexicotheyhavetheDayof

theDeadinearlyNovember.Onthisimportantfeastday,peoplemighteatfoodinshapeofskulls,

andcakeswith“bones“onthem.Theyofferfood,flowersandgiftstothedead.Thefestivalof

Halloweenhaditsoriginasaneventinmemoryofthedead.Itisnowachildren'sfestival,when

theycangototheirneighbours9homesandask.forsweets.Theydressupandtrytofrighten

people.Iftheyarenotgivenanything,thechildrenmightplayatrick.

FestivalstoHonourPeople

Festivalscanbeheldasanhonourtofamouspeopleortothegods.OneoftheseistheDragon

BoatFestivalinChina,whichhonoursthefamousancientpoet,QuYuan.AnotherisColumbus

DayintheUSA,inmemoryofthearrivalofChristopherColumbusinAmerica.InIndiathereisa

nationalfestivalonOctober2tohonourMahatmaGandhi,theleaderwhohelpedgainIndia's

independencefromBritain.

HarvestFestivals

HarvestandThanksgivingfestivalscanbeveryhappyevents.Peoplearegratefulbecausetheir

foodisgatheredforthewinter,andbecauseaseasonofagriculturalworkisover.InEuropean

countriesitisthecustomtodecoratechurchesandtownhallswithflowersandfruit,andpeople

gettogethertohavemeals.Somepeoplemightwinawardsfortheiranimals,flowers,fruitsand

vegetables,likethebiggestwatermelonorthemosthandsomerooster.InChinaandJapanthere

aremid-autumnfestivals,whenpeopleadmirethemoonandgivegiftofmooncakes.

SpringFestivals

Themostenergeticandimportantfestivalsaretheonesthatlookforwardtotheendofwinterand

tothecomingofspring.AttheSpringFestivalinChina,peopleeatdumplings,fishandmeat,and

maygivechildrenluckymoneyintheredpaper.Therearedragondancesandcarnivals,and

familiescelebratethelunarNewYeartogether.InsomeWesterncountriesthereareveryexciting

carnivals,whichtakeplacefortydaysbeforeEasier,usuallyinFebruary.Theymightinclude

parades,dancinginthestreetsdayandnight,loudmusicandcolourfulclothingofallkinds.Easter

isanimportantreligiousandsocialfestivalinChristiancountries.ItcelebratesthereturnofJesus

forChristiansanditalsocelebratesthecomingofspring.InJapan,theCherryBlossomFestival

happensalittlelater.Thecountryiscoveredwithcherrytreeflowerssothatitlooksasthoughit

coffeeshopafterwork.Butshedidn'tturnup.Shecouldbewithherfriendsrightnowlaughing

Afteradmiringtheicesculptureseverywhereinthecity,muchlikethoseinHarbininChina,

youcanhaveacupoftaeorcoffeeinanigloo.Itisamazinghowwarmtheseicehousescanbe!
