Fultonlefttheartworldforacareerinshipbuilding.Hewasinterestedintherecently-inventedsteam

engine,andthoughtitcouldbeusedtopowerships.Fulton,svisionwasnotoriginal;manyothers

hadenteredthefield,andtheunfortunateinventorJohnFitchhadbuiltaworkingsteamshipalready.

ButlikeHenryFord,Fulton,stalentlaynotintheinventionbutintheproduct,sapplicationinthe

marketplace.

Fultondidn,tfocusentirelyonthesteamboat.In1804,hetestedthefirstsubmarinesuccessfully,

whichhehadbuiltfortheBritishRoyalNavy.Hisinventionwouldmakehimacelebrityuponhis

returntotheUnitedStatestwoyearslater.Fulton,spartnerRobertLivingstonobtainedanexclusive

licenseforsteamboatservicesonNewYork,sHudsonRiver.ItwastimeforFultontodeliver.

Tobuildanefficient,reliablesteamboat,FultonusedaspecialEnglishsteamengine.Theship,s

bottomwasflatanditsstemwassquare.ThesteamboatClermontmadeitsdebut(首次亮/目)on

August17,1807,steamingontheriverfromNewYorktoAlbany,anditsoonenteredcommercial

day,Cixiusuallyworenailguardsmadeofgoldorsilver.Accordingtothememoirsofhermaid,

motherlymannersimilartoputtinghernailbabiesintotheirsleepingbags.

TheoriginsofnailguardsbeganintheHanDynastymorethanIOOOyearspriortotheir

becameknownastemporalhoursbecausetheirdurationvariedaccordingtothechanginglengthof

daysandnightswiththepassingoftheseasons.Inthedaytime,summerhourswerelong,andwinter
