Overthepasttwentyyearssomepeoplewhohavebeenfoundguiltyofcommittingacrimein

theUS,inEnglandandinsomestatesinAustraliahavebeensentencedtoanewformof

imprisonment.TheyhavebeencommittedtoHomeDetention.Sometimesthisisalsocalled

HomeImprisonment.Thismeansthatinsteadofgoingtogaol,whichisaninstitutionalprison,

theyhavetospendtheirperiodofdetentionathome.Theirhomebecomestheirprison.

Theformofhomeimprisonmentvariesineachcountryorstate.Sometimestheprisonergoes

straighttohomedetentionafterleavingthecourt.Thisiscalledfrontenddetention.Sometimes

theprisonergoestogaolforthefirstthreequartersofhisorhersentenceandthenspendsthelast

fewmonthsofimprisonmentathome.Thisiscalledabackendofformofhomeimprisonment.

Usually,homebasedprisonerswearelectronictagssothattheirmovementscanbemonitored.

Iftheymovemorethan150metersfromtheirtelephone,thepoliceareinformed,theprisoneris
