Theselectionofabevelgearboxdependsonseveralapplicationfactors:
thekinematicschemeoftheapplicationtodeterminethedesignform,thekinematicschemeofthegearassemblingandtheshafts’rotationdirections;
torqueandrotationspeedrequiredbytheload(operatingmachine);
loadvariability,regardingtheoperatingmachineanditsinertia;
workingcycle:numberofstarts-upperhour,operatingtimeinhoursperday,dutycycle;
environmentalconditions,ambienttemperature,presenceofaggressiveagents;
serviceliferequirementsintermsofoperatinghoursoftheapplication;
typeofengineortypeofdriveonthebevelgearboxinput,availableorrequiredbytheapplication.
Theabovementionedpointsareallveryimportanttodeterminetherightsizeandthetypeofsuitablebevelgearboxforcustomer’sapplication.
Tosimplifytheselection,somefactors,whichtakeintoconsiderationthevariabilityoftheabovemen-tionedconditions,areintroduced.Applyingthesefactorsontheperformancesrequiredbytheapplication,weobtainrecalculatedreferenceperformanceswhichshouldbeconsideredasastartingbasefortheselectionbyconsultingthetableofNominalperformancesgivenforeachbevelgearboxsize.

Afterthegearboxsizehasbeendetermined,itisnecessarytoverifythethermaloperatingconditions,whichmeanstoverifyiftheselectedgearboxcanoperateintherequiredconditionswithoutriskofover-heatingoftheoillubricantandofthecomponents.
EachgearboxhasathermalpowerlimitPT,whichisdeterminedbasedoncontinuousoperatingdutycycleovermax.3hoursat20°Cenvironmenttemperature,valuestatedinthetableatthebottomofthispage,whichmustnotbeexceededwithoutacontrolledandforcedcooling.
Incaseofriskofexceedingthethermalpowerlimit,thebevelgearboxesshouldbealwayslubricatedex-clusivelywithoilinsteadofgrease.
Inordertoconsidertherealenvironmentconditions,ifdifferentfrom20°C,andthedutycycle,ifdifferentfromthereferenceone(continuousoperatingovermax.3hours),twofactorsareintroducedwhichmodifythethermalpowerlimit,allowingthecalculationofthecorrectedthermalpowerlimitPTc:
