nolaptop,iPads,phones,etc.Whenstudentsweretoldmyruleinadvanceoftheclass,someofthem

werenothappy.

Moststudentsassumethatmyreasonsforthisruleincludeunpleasantexperiencesinthepastwith

studentsmisusingtechnology.There'sabitoftruthtothat.SomestudentsassumethatIamanti-

technology.There'snotruthinthatatall.Ilovetechnologyandtrytokeepupwithit,soIcanrelateto

mystudents.

TherealreasonwhyIaskstudentstoleavetechnologyatthedooristhatIthinkthereareveryfew

placesinwhichwecanhavedeepconversationsandtrulyengagecomplexideas.Interruptionsby

technologyoftenbreakconcentrationandallowfortoomuchdependenceonoutsideinformationfor

ideas.Iwantstudentstodigdeepwithinthemselvesforinspirationandideas.Iwantthemtopusheach

othertothinkdifferentlyandmakeconnectionsbetweenthecoursematerialsandtheclassdiscussion.

I'vebeenteachingmyhistoryclassinthiswayformanyyearsandtheevaluationsreflectstudent

satisfactionwiththeenvironmentthatIcreate.Studentsrealizethatwithdeepconversationand

challenge,theylearnatalevelthathelpsthemkeepthecoursematerialsbeyondtheclassroom.

I'mnotsayingthatIwon'teverchangemymindabouttechnologyuseinmyhistoryclass,butuntilI

hearareallygoodreasonforthechange,I'mstickingtomyplan.Afewhoursoftechnology-freedialogue
