numberwasdowntojust13birdsafteryearsofforestclearing.

Aspecialprogramwasstartedin1972tohelpincreasetheparrotpopulation,whichledtothecreationofthreebreeding(繁

殖)centers.JustweeksbeforeHurricaneMariahit,scientistscounted56wildparrotsatElYunque.Thatwasthehighest

numberintheprogram'shistory.Scientistssaythateventhoughseveralparrotshavebeenbornincaptivity(籠養(yǎng))andinthe

wildsinceMaria,thespeciesisstillindanger.

ThePuertoRicanAmazonistheisland'sonlyremainingnativeparrot.Morethan460ofthebirdsarekeptinsidethebreedingcentersatElYunqueandtheRioAbajoforest.Scientistshavenotreleased(釋放)anyofthebirdssinceHurricane

Maria.Athirdbreedingcenter,inaforestinthewesternareaofMaricao,hasnotbeeninoperationsincethestorm.
