Inthelast28-dayperiod(17Julyto13August2023),over1.4millionnewCOVID-19casesandover2300deathswerereportedfromWHO’ssixregionsi,anincreaseof63%andadecreaseof56%,respectively,comparedtotheprevious28days(Figure1,Table1).Asof13August2023,over769millionconfirmedcasesandover6.9milliondeathshavebeenreportedglobally.WhilefourWHOregionshavereporteddecreasesinthenumberofbothcasesanddeaths,theWesternPacificRegionhasreportedanincreaseincasesandadecreaseindeaths.

EvenbeforethediscontinuationofthePublicHealthEmergencyofInternationalConcernforCOVID-19,andinthecontextofongoingintegrationofCOVID-19datawithotherrespiratorydiseasedata,manycountriesareshiftingawayfromCOVID-19-specificreportingtowardsintegratedrespiratorydiseasesurveillance.InthecontextofhighvariabilityinthetimelinessofCOVID-19reportsproducedbyMemberStatesintheAmericas,asofAugust2023PAHO/WHOhaspauseditsspecificCOVID-19EpidemiologicalUpdate.SubsequentCOVID-19

surveillancewillcontinuethroughtheInfluenzaadOtherRespiratoryVirusesbulletinanddashboardsavailable

InthisWEUedition,wehaveincludedallavailabledatafromtheRegionoftheAmericassincethestartofthepandemicupto6August2023intheglobalfigures.However,28-daycomparisonsforthisRegionanditsMemberStatesarenotpresentedasthedataforthereportingperiodwasincomplete.

AscountriesdiscontinueCOVID-19-specificreportingandintegraterespiratorydiseasesurveillance,WHOwillcontinuetouseallavailablesourcestocontinuemonitoringtheCOVID-19epidemiologicalsituation.COVID-19continuestobeamajorthreatandWHOurgesMemberStatestomaintain,notdismantle,theirestablishedCOVID-19infrastructure.Itiscrucialtosustainearlywarning,surveillanceandreporting,varianttracking,earlyclinicalcareprovision,administrationofvaccineboosterstohigh-riskgroups,improvementsinventilation,andregularcommunication.

Currently,reportedcasesdonotaccuratelyrepresentinfectionratesduetothereductionintestingandreportingglobally.Duringthis28-dayperiod,44%(104of234)ofcountriesreportedatleastonecasetoWHO–aproportionthathasbeendecliningsincemid-2022.Itisimportanttonotethatthisstatisticdoesnotreflecttheactualnumberofcountrieswherecasesexist.Additionally,datafrompreviousweeksarecontinuouslybeingupdatedtoincorporateretrospectivechangesinreportedCOVID-19casesanddeathsmadebycountries.Datapresentedinthisreportarethereforeincompleteandshouldbeinterpretedinlightoftheselimitations.SomecountriescontinuetoreporthighburdensofCOVID-19,includingincreasesinnewlyreportedcasesand,more

HospitalizationsandICUadmissions

Atthegloballevel,duringtheanalysed28-dayperiod(10Julyto6August2023),26of234countriesreportedtoWHOatotalof43193newhospitalizations,and23of234countriesreportedtoWHOatotalof654newintensivecareunit(ICU)admissions(Figure4).Thisrepresentsa3%and55%decreaseinhospitalizationsandICUadmissions,respectively,comparedtotheprevious28days(12Juneto9July2023).NotethattheabsenceofreporteddatafromothercountriestotheWHOdoesnotimplythattherearenoCOVID-19relatedhospitalizationsinthosecountries.Thepresentedhospitalizationdataarepreliminaryandmightchangeasnewdatabecomeavailable.Furthermore,hospitalizationdataaresubjecttoreportingdelays.ThesedataalsolikelyincludebothhospitalizationswithincidentalcasesofSARS-CoV-2infectionandthoseduetoCOVID-19disease.

Globally,duringthepast28days,ofthe26(11%)countriesthatreporteddatatoWHOonnewhospitalizationsatleastonce(Figure5),theEuropeanRegionhadthehighestproportionofcountriesreporting(15countries;25%),followedbytheSouth-EastAsiaRegion(twocountries;20%),theWesternPacificRegion(threecountries;9%),theRegionoftheAmericas(fourcountries;7%),theEasternMediterraneanRegion(onecountry;5%),andtheAfricanRegion(onecountry;2%).Theproportionofcountriesthatconsistentlyiireportednewhospitalizationsfortheperiodwas7%(17countries)(Table2).

Amongthe17outof234countriesconsistentlyreportingnewhospitalizationstoWHO,six(35%)countriesregisteredanincreaseof20%orgreaterinhospitalizationsduringthepast28dayscomparedtotheprevious28-dayperiod:Bangladesh(1615vs210;669%),Kyrgyzstan(10vsfour;+150%),Greece(1322vs816;+62%),Malta(152vs105;45%),theUnitedStatesofAmerica(32322vs24488;+32%)andMexico(863vs679;+27%).ThehighestnumbersofnewhospitalizationswerereportedfromtheUnitedStatesofAmerica(32322vs24488;+32%),Malaysia(2881vs3833;-25%),andBangladesh(1615vs210;+669%).

Globally,inthepast28days,23(10%)countriesreporteddatatoWHOonnewICUadmissionsatleastonce(Figure5).Amongthem,theEuropeanRegionhadthehighestproportionofreportingcountries(14countries;23%),followedbytheWesternPacificRegion(fivecountries;14%),theSouth-EastAsiaRegion(onecountry;10%),andtheRegionoftheAmericas(threecountries;5%).TheAfricanRegionandtheEasternMediterraneanRegiondidnotreportICUadmissiondataduringtheperiod.TheproportionofcountriesthatconsistentlyreportednewICUadmissionsfortheperiodwas5%(12countries)(Table2).

Amongthe12countriesconsistentlyreportingnewICUadmissionstoWHO,two(17%)countriesshowedanincreaseof20%orgreaterinnewICUadmissionsduringthepast28dayscomparedtotheprevious28-dayperiod:Latvia(sixvstwo;+200%)andGreece(26vs20;+30%).ThehighestnumbersofnewICUadmissionswerereportedfromBrazil(385vs714;-46%),Australia(94vs171;-45%),andItaly(57vs77;-26%).

WHOiscurrentlytrackingseveralSARS-CoV-2variants,including:

?Threevariantsofinterest(VOIs);XBB.1.5,XBB.1.16andEG.5.

?Sevenvariantsundermonitoring(VUMs)andtheirdescentlineages;BA.2.75,BA.2.86,CH.1.1,XBB,XBB.1.9.1,XBB.1.9.2andXBB.2.3.

On17August2023,WHOdesignatedanewSARS-CoV-2variant,thathasbeenassignedthescientificname(Pango-lineagedesignation)BA.2.86asaVUMduetothelargenumber(>30)ofspikegenemutationsitcarries.Currently,thereareonlyfourknownsequencesofthisvariantreportedfromtwocountriesintheEuropeanRegionandonecountryintheRegionoftheAmericaswithnoknownassociatedepidemiologicalconnections.ThepotentialimpactoftheBA.2.86mutationsarepresentlyunknownandundergoingcarefulassessment(Table3).WHOcontinuestocallforbettersurveillance,sequencingandreportingofCOVID-19asthisviruscontinuestocirculateandevolve.

Globally,XBB.1.16andEG.5arethemostprevalentVOIsreportedsincetheiremergencefrom101and50countries,respectively.Inepidemiologicalweek30(24to30July2023),bothXBB.1.16andEG.5accountedfor21.1%ofsequenceswithEG.5comprisingofa2-foldincreaseincomparisontoaprevalenceof10.2%inepidemiologicalweek26(26Juneto2July2023)(Table3).Additionalinformationcanbefoundinthe

InitialRiskEvaluation

thatwasfinalizedon9August2023.

XBB.1.5,reportedfromatotalof121countriesglobally,continuestoshowadecliningtrend.XBB.1.5accountedfor11.0%ofsequencesinweek30comparedto14.5%inweek26(Table3).

Table3showsthenumberofcountriesreportingtheVOIsandVUMsandtheirprevalencefromweek26toweek30.Duringthelastfiveweeks,theVOIandtheVUMsthathaveshownincreasingtrendsarehighlightedinorange,thosethathaveremainedstablearehighlightedinblue,whilethosewithdecreasingtrendsarehighlightedingreen.

AmongtheVUMs,XBB.1.9.2showedadecliningprevalencetrend,goingfrom7.1%inweek26to5.2%inweek30;whilstotherVUMshaveshownstabletrendsduringthesamereportingperiod(Table3).
