stemcellcourierswhentheyretiredandreturnedtoEngland.

plantandatomatoplant.Doddersusearoot一likeparttoentertheirhostplantsandfeedontheir

nutrients.

Inpreviousstudies,Westwoodhaddiscoveredthatduringthisinteraction,RNAmolecules(分

子),whichplayacrucialroleintranslatinginformationpasseddownfromDNA,werebeingpassed

betweenthetwospecies.

Andrecently,WestwoodlookedintothepossibilitythataspecialtypeofRNAmolecules,

mRNAorMessengerRNA,werealsobeingexchangedbetweentheparasiticandhostplants,

mRNAmoleculessendmessageswithincells,instructingthemonwhichactionstotakeandwhen.

Throughthisexchange,theparasiticplantmaybeinstructingitshosttoloweritsdefensessothat

theparasiticplantcanmoreeasilyattackit.

Besidesgivingusamuchdeeperinsightintothebehaviourofplants,thisinformationcould

helpscientistscomeupwithbettersolutionstofighttheparasiticweedsthatthreatenfoodcrops.

ParasiticplantsareseriousproblemsforcropsthathelpfeedsomeofthepoorestregionsinAfrica

andelsewhere.Inaddition,ithasexcitingimplicationsforthedesignofnovelcontrolstrategies

basedoninterruptingthemRNAinformationthattheparasite(寄生蟲)usestoreprogramthehost.
