However,poisonousgasesfromthecenteroftheearthcontinuetoflowupthroughcracksinthebottomofthelake.Thisisnormalinacraterlake.Inmostcraterlakes,thesegasesarereleasedoftenbecausethewater‘turnsover’regularly.Thatis,thewaterfromthebottomofthelakerisesandmixeswiththewateratthetop,allowingthegasestoescapeslowly.
However,inLakesNyosandMonoun,thereisnoregularturningover.Nooneknowsthereasonforthisfact,butasaresult,theselakeshavemoregasestappedatthebottomthanothercraterlakes.
Infact,scientistswhohavestudiedLakesNyosandMonounhavefound16,000timesmoregases.Whenastrongwind,coolweatherastorm,oralandslide(滑坡)causesthewatertoturnoversuddenly,thegasesescapeinaviolentexplosion.
Inthepast,nooneknewwhenthegasesmightexplode,sotherewasnowayforthevillagerstoescapedisaster.
