Mrs.Claussenwasdifferentthough.Shespentthefirstseveralweeksjusttalkingtome-askingmeallkindsofquestionsaboutmyself-aboutfeelings-aboutwhatIthoughtIdidwhenIblocked.Andshelistened.Shebegantoteachmeaboutthefundamentalsofspeech.Notjustaboutmyspeech,butabouteverybody’s.Mrs.Claussentaughtmeabouttechnicalthings,likecircumlocution(afancytermforavoidingwords).Andshelistened.

Isanginthechoirallofmyschoolcareerandwasaprettygoodtenor.AtmyoldschoolIwasinthetopconcertchoir,butwhenmyfamilywastransferredIlearnedthatthenewschool’schoirwasallfilledup.Itwassuchadisappointment.IfeltlikethatwastheonethingthatIcouldreallydowell-andIcoulddoitwithoutstuttering.SomehowMrs.Claussenpulledsomestrings,rearrangedmywholeschedule,andgotmeinthechoir.Ifeltlikeshereallycaredaboutmeasaperson,notjustaspeechstudent.

DuringmylasttwoyearsofschoolIcouldn’treallysaythatmyspeechgotmuchbetter-exceptintherapy.SheexplainedthatmyincreasedfluencyintherapywasbecauseIwassorelaxed,andIknewthatshedidn’tcareifIstuttered.IremembersayingthatIwishedthewholeworldwasabigtherapysession.Welaughed!

Mrs.ClaussentoldmethatwhenIlefthighschoolandwentofftocollegethatmyspeechwouldprobablygetworseforawhile.Shewassureright.Thingsgotconsiderablyworse.IwonderedifIwouldeverbeabletocommunicate.Itwasaverydepressingtime,andIoftenfeltalone.

OnedaywhenIwasfeelingparticularlysorryformyself,IrecalledsomethingthatMrs.Claussenhadtoldmeoverandover.ShesaidthatifIreallywantedtochangemyspeechandbecomemorefluentthatIcould,butthatitwasalluptome.Irememberedshesaidnottostriveforperfectspeech,justbetterspeech.Shewasrightaboutthat,too.Ieventuallylookedforandfoundanotherspeechtherapist.Ibegantoworkveryhardandoverthenextcoupleofyearsimprovedmyspeechconsiderably.
