Alongtimeagoandfaraway,therelivedawomanandherhusband.Thewomanwasverysadforshehadnochildren.

Onedayshesatbyherwindow.“IwishIhadadaughter,“shesighed.“Evenifshewereonlythesizeofmythumb.“

Nowthefairiesheardher,andbecausethewomanwasgoodandkind,theygrantedherwish.

Thenextmorning,onthewindowsill,wasaflowerpotwithabeautifulflowergrowing.

Thewomanwatchedasthefloweropened,andtherenestledinthepetalswasabeautifulgirl--justthesizeofthewoman”sthumb!

Thewomanwasveryhappyandshemadeclothesforher,andabedfromawalnutshell.Thegirlatetinyamounts--acrumbwaslikealoaftoher!

“IshallcallyouThumbelina,“saidthewoman.

SomebodyelsewatchedThumbelina--thetoadfromthebrook.Shewaslookingforawifeforherson,andThumbelinawasperfect.

OnenightshecameandstoleThumbelinaawaywhileshewassleeping.Shecreptthroughabrokenwindowpaneanddraggedawaythewalnutshell.

Thumbelinaawokenearthetoad”sholebythebrook.

“Youraretobemyson”swife,“saidtheoldtoad.“Hewilltakeyoutohisholdlatertoday.“

Thumbelinadidnotwanttobeatoad”swife,andlookedaroundforhelp.Abutterflytookpityonherandsaid,“JumponthisleafandI”lldragitdownstreamawayfromthetoads.

Thumbelinawassosmallandlightthatthebutterflycouldeasilydragtheleaf.Thumbelinaescapedfromthetoads,butshewasstillfarfromhome.

Whentheleafstoppedagainstthebank,shejumpedoffandbegantolookforsomewheretostay.

Itwassummer,andverywarmandtherewasplentyoffruittoeatinthehedgerows.Itwasmildatnight,soThumbelinawanderedonlookingforanewhome.

Butsummersoonended,andautumncam.thedaysgrewcolder,andsodidthenights.Thumbelinasummerdresswaswornout,andshefeltcoldallthetime.

Onewarmerdayshewanderedintoacornfield.Thecornhadbeencut,andshecouldwalkthroughthestubble.Shesatinthesunshineandcried.

“What”swrong,mydear?“squeakedasmallvoice.

Thumbelinalookedup.Itwasafieldmouse.

“Winter”scomingandIhavenowheretogo,“saidThumbelina.

Thefieldmouselivedallalone,andverymuchwantedsomeonetokeephercompanyforthewintermonths.

“Ihaveaspareroom,“shesaid.“Youcouldstaythere,ifyou”llhelpmearoundthehouse.“

“Ofcourse,“saidThumbelina.“I”llhelpasmuchasIcan.Thankyou.“

Thumbelinawasveryhappywiththefieldmouse.TheysharedallthehouseworkandThumbelinahadherownroom,newclothesandsomeonetotalkto.Shetoldthefieldmouseaboutheradventuressofar.

“My,whatabusylifeyou”vehad!“saidthefieldmouse.“youmustmeetmyfriend,Mr.Mole.He”lltellyouallsortsofthings.AverydistinguishedfellowisMr.Mole.“

Mr.Molecametovisitseveraltimesoverthewinter.Thegroundabovetheirheadswascoldandhard,buthecameinthetunnelshehadduginthesummer.

“youmustcomeandseemyhome,“hesaidtoThumbelina.

Whenhehadgone,thefieldmousewasveryexcited.

“He”sneverdonethatbefore,“shesqueaked.“Noonehasbeeninvitedtohimhomebefore.Hemustlikeyou.Youcoulddonoworsethanmarryhim,youknow.“

Thumbelinawashorrified.ShedidnotwanttobemarriedtoMr.Mole.Hehadalreadytoldherhowmuchhehatedthesunshineandflowers.Thumbelinalovedflowersandthewarmsun.

Oneday,whenspringwasdrawingnearandtheweatherwasgrowingwarner,Mr.Moleledthewayalongandpassagesbetweenthefieldmouse”shomeandhisown.

“Becarefulhere,“hesuddenlysaid.“Oneofthosesummerbirdshasfalleninhere.“Hepointedtotheswallow”sbody.

Thumbelinawasverysadtoseeit.Laterthatdayshewentbacktoit.Shehelditsheadinherarms,andafterawhile,muchtohersurprisethebirdmoved.Itwasstillalive.

WhenitwasabletotalkittoldThumbelinahowithadreturnedearlyfromthewarmlandsinthesouthandhadbeencaughtinacoldsnap.IthadcrawledintoMr.Mole”stunnelforshelter.

Thumbelinatookfoodtotheswallowandsoonitwasreadytoleave.

“Comewithme,Thumbelina,“saidtheswallow.

“Ican”t,“saidThumbelina.“Itwouldbeunfairtoleavethefieldmousesosuddenly.She”sbeengoodtome.“

“Ifyouchangeyourmind,“saidtheswallow,flyingaboveherhead,“justcaloutforme.Good-byeandthankyou.“

Winterpassedintospring,anditbecamemoreobviousthatMr.MolewantedThumbelinatobehiswife.

“Wecanbemarriedintheautumn,“hetoldthefieldmouse,whowasveryexcited.

“Oh,Thumbelina,“shesaid.“Wewillprepareeverythingfortheautumn.Wemustmakemewclothesforyou,newlinensforyournewhome,onallsortsofthings.Busy,busy,busy.“

ThefieldmousewashappytogoaroundandorganisethingsforThumbelina.

Summerwaswarm,andthescarletpoppiesbobbedtheirheadshighaboveThumbelinainthecornfield.Thecorngrewhigher,andwavedinthesummerbreezes.

Autumnwasfastapproachingandsowastheweddingday.

”Ican”tmarryMr.Mole,”thoughtThumbelina.

“Youwon”tbeabletocomeuptotheflowersandsunshinewhenyou”remarriedtome,“Mr.Molehadtoldher.“They”reawasteoftime.Wormsandlifeundergroundisbestforyouandme.“

“MayIgotositinthesunforthelasttime?“Thumbelinaaskedonherweddingday.

“Youmay,“saidMr.Mole.“Butdon”tbetoolong.“

Thumbelinaranuptothesurfaceandwentthroughthecornfield.

“Cometome,swallow,“shecalled.“Helpmetoescape.“

Amomentlater,theswallowflewdown.

“Thumbelina!“hesaid.“Iwaitedforyou.Climbonmyback.We”llflysouthtothewarmlands.“

Thumbelinaclimbedonandheldtighttotheswallow”sfeathers,astheyflewsouthoverfieldsandforests,lakesandseas.
