Hisapproachisbasedondetectingimperfectionsintheprintqualityofdocuments.Old-schoolcourtscientistswereabletotracedocumentstoparticulartypewritersbasedonquirks(溝槽)oftheindividualkeys.Heemploysasimilarapproach,exploitingthefactthattherotatingdrumsandmirrorsinsideaprinterareimperfectpiecesofengineeringwhichleaveuniquepatternsofbandingintheirproducts.

Althoughthesepatternsareinvisibletothenakedeye,theycanbedetectedandanalyzedbycomputerprograms,anditisthesethatDr.Chiuhasspentthepastyeardevising.Sofar,hecannottraceindividualprinters,buthecantellprettyreliablywhichmakeandmodelofprinterwasusedtocreateadocument.

That,however,isonlythebeginning.Whileitremainstobeseenwhetheritwillbepossibletotraceacounterfeitdocumentbacktoitsguiltycreatoronthebasisofmanufacturingimperfections,Dr.Chiuisnowworkingoutwaystomakethoseimperfectionsdeliberate.Hewantstomodifytheprintingprocesssothatunique,invisiblesignaturescanbeincorporatedintoeachmachineproducedwhichwouldmakenaydocumenttraceable.

Ironically,itwasafteryearsofcollaboratingwithprintingcompaniestoreducebandingandthusincreasethequalityofprints,thathecameupwiththeideaofintroducingartificialbandingthatcouldencodeidentificationinformationintoadocument.Usingthebandingpatternsofprinterstosecuredocumentswouldbebothcheaptoimplementandhard,ifnotimpossible,forthosewithoutspecialistknowledgeandhardwaretohideout.

Notsurprising,theAmericanSecretServiceismonitoringtheprogressofthisresearchveryclosely,andisprovidingguidelinestohelpDr.Chiutotravelinwhattheservicethinksistherightdirection,whichisfineforcatchingcriminals.ButhowthelegalusersofprinterswillreacttoBigBrotherbeingabletotrackanydocumentbacktohissourceremainstobeseen.62.Bysaying"nodocumentissafeanymore",theauthorprobablymeans______.[A]
