Plot

TenyearsafterSarahConnor(LindaHamilton)destroyedtheoriginalTerminatorthatwasprogrammedtokillher,twoTerminatorsarrivedinLosAngelesfromthepost-apocalypticyear2029.ThefirstwastheT-800model101(ArnoldSchwarzenegger),thesametypeofcyborgthatSarahfirstencountered,whilethesecondwastheT-1000(RobertPatrick).

JohnConnor(EdwardFurlong)wasnowlivingwithfosterparentsToddandJanelle(XanderBerkeleyandJenetteGoldstein).Hehadgrownupbeingtoldbyhismotherthathewouldsomedayleadtheremnantsofthehumanracetoultimatevictoryagainstthemachines.Sarah’sexperienceshadsignificantlychangedwhoshewas.Shewasnolongerthefrailwomanthatshewasinthefirstfilm.Awareofwhatcouldultimatelyhappentomankind,shebecamefartougherandmorevigilant,andsufferedrecurringnightmaresabouttheendoftheworld.Herpersonalityhadledthosearoundher,evenherownson,tothinkthatshewasinsane.Shehadthereforebeenimprisonedinamentalinstitution,PescaderoStateHospital.

Meanwhile,bothTerminatorseventuallylocatedJohnConnor.Thetwist,givenawaybyadvancepublicity,wasthatthistimetheT-800hadbeencapturedandreprogrammedbytheresistancegroupofhumansfromthefutureinordertoprotectJohn,whiletheT-1000,anadvancedprototypeterminator,hadbeensentbySkynettokillhim.Thenewer,sleekermodelTerminator(a"mimeticpolyalloy")wasconstructedof"liquidmetal"andwasabletoemulatethephysicalformofanysolidobjectofequalsizethatitsampledthroughtouch(excludingcomplexmachineswithmovingpartslikegunsandexplosives),includinganotherhumanbeing.

AfterbeingrescuedbytheT-800fromtheT-1000’sinitialattemptstokillhim,JohnrealizedthathismotherhadbeentellingthetruthanddecidedthathemustrescueherfromPescadero.TheT-800thenrevealedthatitwasprogrammedtofollowhisorders.WhenJohnsawitnearlyshootamanintheparkinglotwhilecarryingoutitsmissiontoprotecthim,heordereditnottokillanyone.HedecidedtousehispowerovertheT-800tohisadvantageandorderedtheT-800tohelphimrescuehismother.WhentheybrokeintoPescadero,theT-800shotthesecurityguardatthegateinthelegs,thentookhiskeysandweapons.TheT-800toldJohn,"He'lllive,"upholdingJohn'sordernottokillanyoneelse.

SarahwasunderstandablyfrightenedatfirstuponencounteringanotherT-800.Shewastoldbyhersonthatthistimeitwasheretoprotectthemboth,butsheinitiallyhadadifficulttimeacceptingitasanally.Incidentally,Dr.PeterSilberman,thepsychiatristwhoscoffedatbothReeseandConnor'ssupposedlydelusionalclaimsofbeinghuntedbyarobotassassin,wasprofoundlyshakenatseeingtwosuchmachinesinactionbeforehiseyes.AfterSarahwasrescued,shequestionedtheT-800aboutthecreatorofSkynet,thesupercomputerfatedtodestroyhumanityinfavorofmachinerule.TheT-800toldherofMilesDyson(JoeMorton),atop-levelcomputerscientistatCyberdyneSystemsCorporation,andrecountedthehistoryofSkynet’sdevelopment,allthewayuptoAugust29,1997,thedaySkynetbecameself-awareandlaunchednuclearweaponsagainstmankind(JudgmentDay).

Eventually,Sarah,John,andtheT-800arrivedinthedesertatEnriqueSalceda’scamp.EversinceSarahgavebirthtoJohn,shehadtraveledeverywhere,datingmilitarymenandtryingtoprovidehersonwithastrongmilitarybackground.Enriquewasoneofthemenfromherpast(thoughtheprecisenatureoftheirrelationshipwasneverestablished),andhepreservedaweaponscacheforSarahandJohnforuseintheeventnucleardevastationactuallycametopass.SarahplannedtofleeovertheMexicanborderwithJohnandtheT-800Terminator,armedwithweaponsfromthecache.

SarahwitnessedtheirbondingandnotedthatamachineistheclosestthingtoafatherthatJohnhadeverhad.ThenshefellasleepatatableandhadanightmareaboutLosAngelesbeingdestroyedbynuclearweaponry.Shewatchedinhorroraspeople,buildings,andcarswereallincineratedintheblast,andalthoughshetriedtowarnthem,nooneinherdreamcouldhearher,andshewasgraphicallyincineratedherself.Shesuddenlywokeupanddiscoveredthatshehadscratched"NOFATE"intothetableshewassittingat,anallusiontothekeymessagethatwassenttoherinthefirstfilmbythefutureJohnConnorviaKyleReese:

"Thefutureisnotset.Thereisnofatebutwhatwemakeforourselves."

Sarahrealizedwhatshemustdo,armedherself,anddroveoffinoneofEnrique'scars.JohnrecognisedtheallusiontothemessageandheandtheT-800realizedthatsheplannedtokillMilesDyson.AtJohn'sinsistence-andovertheT-800'sobjection-theywentafterher.AtDyson'shome,Sarahbrokeinandshotthecomputerprogrammerintheshoulder,butwasunabletokillhiminfrontofhiswifeandson.JohnandtheT-800arrivedandthemachinerevealeditsorigintoDyson.Sarah,JohnandtheT-800convincedDysonthattheymustdestroyallCyberdynetechnologyusedinbuildingSkynet,includingtheheavily-guardedremainsoftheCPUandcyberneticarmleftfromthepreviousT-800destroyedbySarah.

Sarah,John,theT-800andDysoninfiltratedtheCyberdynebuildingandprepareexplosivesfordetonationwhileretrievingthecyberneticarmandCPUfromthefirstT-800.However,theiractivitiesattractedtheattentionofpoliceandSWAT.WhiletheConnorsandDysonfinishedtheirwork,theT-800createdadiversion,strategicallyshootingandexplodingseveralpolicecarsinsuchawaythathekillednoneofthepoliceofficers.Duringthefirefight,however,Dysonwasshot.Realizinghiswoundswerefatal,hestayedbehindwiththedetonatortoallowtheT-800,SarahandJohntomaketheirescape.Withhisdeath,hereleasedthetrigger,activatingthebombsjustaftertheSWATteamretreatedfromthearea.

Meanwhile,theT-1000arrivedatCyberdyne.John,SarahandtheT-800flee,leadingtoapursuitonthehighway,whichendedatasteelmill.SinglecombatbetweenthetwoTerminatorsensued,endingwiththeT-800firingagrenadeintotheT-1000.Thegrenadeexploded,causingtheT-1000toloseitsbalanceandfalloffaplatformintoapoolofmoltensteel.TheT-1000wasunabletosurviveatsuchextremelyhightemperaturesandmelted.

JohnthenthrewboththefirstT-800’scyberneticarmandCPUintothemoltensteel.TheT-800thenpointedoutthatitmustalsobedestroyedinordertocompletelydestroyallevidenceofSkynettechnology.JohnrefusedtoacceptthisandorderedtheT-800nottogo.TheT-800refusedhiscommand.SeeingtearsonJohn’sface,theT-800statedthatitfinallyunderstoodwhypeoplecry.

JohnandtheT-800embracedforthefirstandlasttime;then,theT-800andSarahshookhands.Themachinesteppedontoachainoverlookingthemoltensteelpoolandbiddedbothofthemfarewell;thenSarahloweredthechain,andtheT-800,intothemoltensteel.Astheywatchedfromabove,theT-800slowlydisintegratedinthesizzlingpooloffire.ThelastactualimageoftheT-800wasitsoutstretchedhandformingathumbs-up.

Intheclosingsceneofthefilm,depictingadarkhighwayatnight,SarahConnorconcludedinvoiceoverthatthefuturewasnotpredeterminedandwhateverhappeneddependedonthechoiceswemake.Shealsostatedthatifamachinecanlearnthevalueofhumanlife,maybehumanitycantoo.
