Inthosedaysyoureallyeasedintohighwaytraffic,and
thelong,neatrowsofcarsseemedmobiletestimonytothe
sanityofmostpeople.Perhapsmemoryfails,perhapsthere
werealwaystestydrivers,perhaps—buteveryone
didn’tgiveyouthefinger.

recentlyinManhattan.Wewerefourcarsabreast,stopped
atatrafficlight.Andtherewasnomovingevenwhenthe
lighthadchanged.Abushadstoppedinthecrosstraffic,
blockingourpaths:itwasnormal-for-New-York-City
gridlock.Perhapsimpatient,perhapslateforimportant
appointments,threeofusnohelessaeptedwhat,afterall,
wecouldnotalter.One,however,wouldnot.Hewouldnot
behelpless.Hewouldgowherehewasgoingevenifhe
couldn’tgetthere.Hegotoutofhiscarandstrode
towardthebus,rappingsmartlyonitsdoors.Whenthey
opened,heexchangedwordswiththedriver.Thedoors
foldedshut.Hethensteppedinfrontofthebus,tookhold
ofoneofitslargewindshieldwipersandbrokeit.
