Creativitygoesbeyondpossessionanduseofartistictalent.Inthiscontext,talentreferstothepossessionofahighdegreeoftechnicalskillinaspecializedarea.Thusanartistmayhavewonderfultechnicalskills,butmaynotsucceedinevokingtheemotionalresponsethatmakestheviewerfeelthatapainting,forexample,isunique.Itisimportanttokeepinmindthatchildren'screativityisevidencednotonlyinmusic,art,orwriting,butalsoinscience,socialstudiesandotherareas.

Mostmeasuresofchildren'screativityhavefocusedonideationalfluency.Ideationalfluencytasksrequirechildrentogenerateasmanyresponsesastheycantoaparticularstimulus,asisdoneinbrainstorming.Ideationalfluencyisgenerallyconsideredtobeacriticalfeatureofthecreativeprocess.Children'sresponsemaybeeitherpopularororiginal,withthelatterconsideredevidenceofcreativepotential.Thuswhenweaskfour-year-oldstotellus"allthethingstheycanthinkofred,"wefindthatchildrennotonlylistwagons,apples,andcardinals,butalsochildrenpoxandcoldhands.
