Weobservethatindividualsfaceincreasingfinancialrisksandcostsdueto:IncreasedcomplexityMultiplicationofinexperiencedconsumersHouseholdsaretakingonmorefinancialriskandresponsibility.Thisistrueforbothcreditdecisionsandretirementsavings.Theshifttodefinedcontributionpensionschemestransfersbothinvestmentandlongevityriskstoindividuals.Willtheymaketherightdecisions?Themarketforadjustable,variable,interestonlymortgageloans(sometimesalsoinforeigncurrency)hasexplodedinseveralcountriesandtransferinterestratesriskonhouseholds8ConsumersareclearlynotpreparedtofacethesechallengesandrisksWorldwidesurveysshowtheleveloffinancialliteracyislowinallcountries,includingindevelopedcountries.Worse:consumersoftenoverestimatetheirfinancialunderstandingandthusdonotseektoimproveitConsumerpressuresexacerbatedinthecrisiscontextFinancialcrisisevolvedintoarecessionOver50millionjobstobelost(accordingtotheUN)RevenuelossinmanyhouseholdsAssetvaluesgoingdownDecreasedvalueofpropertyPlungingpensionfundreturns(>$5trillioninlosses)ThecrisisCausesaremultifaceted:
