Corporatepartnershipsalsoallowforadiversityofnationalitiesandpurposes.ProfLiuandLoadestelloftheirpartnershipwiththeBMWFoundation,whichhelpsESMToffertenscholarshipstodisplacedwomenfromUkrainetostudyfortheglobalonlineMBA–upskillingthattheycaneventuallytakebacktoUkrainetohelprebuildthecountry.AnotherpartnershipthatESMThasmadetodiversifyitsprogrammeiswithAllianzInsurance,whichsponsors10studentseachyear,ofwhichsevenaresocialentrepreneursthatgettheirglobalonlineMBAsponsored.ONSUCCESSMostpeople,ifnotall,startinganMBAoreventhinkingaboutstartingonearepeoplewhohaveahighdrivetowardsuccessintheirprofessionallife.SoweconcludebysharinghowLoadesandLiudefinesuccess.Loadessaysthat,forher,successis“whenIseeourstudentstransformthroughtheirlearninganddevelopment.BecauseIthinkeducationisuniqueinitsabilitytogenuinelytransformlives.Andseeingourstudentsdothat,that'swhatgetsmeoutofbedinthemorning.”ProfLiusays:“Ihaveaveryshortanswer.Helpingotherstosucceed.That'sit.”8 THEEUROPEANBUSINESSREVIEW NOVEMBER-DECEMBER2022EDUCATIONNEXT-GENEDUCATION:TeachingHumansHowtoThriveinaWorldofIntelligentMachinesbySeanCuleyInJuly2022,Ihadthepleasureofpresentingakeynoteon“thefutureofwork”toover200headteachersattheDeltaAcademiesTrustconferenceintheUK.Thebackgroundoftheattendeeswassomewhatdifferentfrommyusualaudienceofbusinessandsupplychainleaders,andthisledtoadifferentsetofquestions,mostlyfocusedonhowthey,aseducators,couldstayrelevantinthisworldofconstantdisruptionandexponentialtechnologicaladvancement.Thequestionsaskedincluded:“Howshouldwebestpreparethenextgenerationofstudentsforaworldthatisunknownandforjobsthatmaynotyetexist?”“YoumentionedthattechcompaniessuchasGoogle,Meta,andApplearedevelopingtheirownacademicinstitutionstotraintheirfutureworkforce.Howdoweaspubliceducatorscompete?”“HowdoIinspiremystudentsandmotivatethemtorealisethedangerandtakeactiontolearntheseskillsnow?Ihavestudentswhosegrandadwasaplumber,dadwasaplumber;andtheyassumetheywilljustbecomeaplumber,too.HowdoIgetthemtoaspiretobemore?"“Howlongdowehavebeforewearereplacedbymachines?”10 THEEUROPEANBUSINESSREVIEW NOVEMBER-DECEMBER2022Whataretheskillsneededtobecomeentrepreneurial?Howcouldtheycreateapremiumvaluepropositionbyprovidingalevelofserviceandqualitythatsetsthemapartfromthecompetition?Theplumberquestionmademechucklebecause,inmybookTransitionPoint:FromSteamtotheSingularityi,Ispecificallyuseplumbingasanexampleofoneofthejobsthatareverydifficulttoautomateaway!Whilema-chinescanmakealmosteverythingaplumberuses,wearedecadesawayfromroboticplumb-ers.Plumbersarealsoinhighdemand,especial-lyintheUK,asyoungpeoplewereencouragedtogotouniversityratherthantotechnicalcolleges
(mostofwhichwerecloseddown),creatingaglutofsocialmediaadministratorsandmarket-ersbutsuchashortageofskilledtradespeoplethattheUKneededtoimportskilledlabourfromabroad.Iadvisedtheteacherthatperhaps,rath-erthanpersuadinghisstudentsnottobecomeaplumber,heshouldinsteadencouragethemtoexaminehowtheycouldbecomethebestplumberpossible,explorewhatmakesanexcel-lentplumberversusanaverageone,andinspirethemtocreateasuccessfulplumbingbusinessandgrowitsothatitwasnotsolelyreliantonhisownlabour.Whataretheskillsneededtobe-comeentrepreneurial?Howcouldtheycreateapremiumvaluepropositionbyprovidingalevelofserviceandqualitythatsetsthemapartfromthecompetition?Howcouldyouinspirethemtogrowasuccessfulplumbingbusiness,ratherthanjustbea 11EDUCATIONOtherquestionsraisedtheissuethattherewasanapparentgapbetweenthesubjectstheywereteachingintheirschoolsandtheskillsbusinessesneededmovingforwards–acaseofindustrial-ageeducationinadigitalworld.Oneoftheheadteachersfreelyadmittedthatteachingstylesandcontenthadchangedlittleinthelasttwodecadesandthatmykeynotehadscaredhimbecauseithighlightedjusthowfarbehindtheeducationcurriculumhadfallen.Thedawningrealisationthatthesubjectstheyteach,andinmanycasestheirownpersonalknowledge,areoutofdateandnolongerrelevant.WHATSHOULDEDUCATIONFOCUSON?ThequestionIwasaskedmostattheeventwasavariationof,“Ifwedon’tknowwhatthejobs
knowledgeisinstantlysearchableonapocketdevicethatvirtuallyeverystudentowns?Theindustrial-ageeducationmodelwasdesignedtomass-manufactureworkersintothestableandpredictableworldoflong-termcareersandmassemployment.However,theworldweliveinnowisnolongerstableandpredictable;itisvolatileanduncertainandwillremainsomovingforwards.Whichexplainswhythequestionsaskedofmewerereallyvariationsof,“Howdoweensurethatourstudentsleavetheeducationsystemwiththeskillsneededtoattracttheattentionofemployers?”ButI’mnotsurethisistherightquestion.Therightques-tion,inmymind,is,“Howdoweensurethatstudentsleavetheeducationsystemwiththeskillsneededtobecomethemasteroftheirowndestinyandhaveasuccessfullife?”This,Ithink,isthebetterquestion,becauseitopenssomanymoreopportunitiesforboththeeducatorandthestudent,freeingthemfromarigidfocusonindustrial-ageskillsandinsteadallowingthemthefreedomtocreatedigital-agemindsets.Therightquestion,inmymind,is,“Howdoweensurethatstudentsleavetheeducationsystemwiththeskillsneededtobecomethemasteroftheirowndestinyandhaveasuccessfullife?”ofthefutureare,andthereforewhatskillsthosejobswillneed,howdowedecidewhattoteachourstudents?”Ithoughtaboutthisonthelongdrivehome,ponderingthequestionastowhateducatorsshouldteachinaworldwherethefuturelooksnothinglikethepast,wherethejobstheirstudentswilllikelybecompetingfordonotyetexist,andthusthespecificskillsthatemployerswillseekareunknown.Howdostateeducationsystemscompeteinaworldwhereall
OPENINGMINDSTOTHEOPPORTUNITIES;PREPARINGTHEMFORTHEJOURNEYInmybookTransitionPoint,thereisasectioncalled“ATaleofTwoMindsets”,whereIdetailhowthedigitalageisprovidingpeoplewiththeoptionoftwofutures,theselectionofwhichisprimarilydependentontheirmindset.Thefirstfutureisoneofunbridledopportunity,thesecondunlimiteddistraction.Fortheveryfirsttime,weareinaworldwhereyourabilitytoeducateyourselfisnotdependentonyourfamilybackground,wealth,orgeography.Theschoolteacherorprofessorisnolongerthefontofallknowledge.Thedigitalagehasclearedthatbottleneck,providinginstantaccesstoawholeseriesofonlineeduca-tionproviders,suchasCoursera1,FutureLearn2,Udemy3,andKhanAcademy4,enablingpeopletoinvestigateandlearnaboutalmostanything12 THEEUROPEANBUSINESSREVIEW NOVEMBER-DECEMBER2022theyareinterestedin.Wanttoknowaboutquantumphysics?Courserahas25courses5onthesubject,nearlyallprovidedbytheworld’sbestuniversities,mostofwhicharefree,andallofwhichcanbeaccessedatatime,location,andspeedthatsuitsyou,nottheprovider.Wearealsolivinginatimewhereyoucanstartupabusinesswithjustyourlaptopandyourtime,freefromthesignificantcapitalexpendi-turethatsettingupanenterpriserequired,andwhichbecamesuchabarrierintheindustrialage.NolongerdoentrepreneurialpeopleneedFortheveryfirsttime,weareinaworldwhereyourabilitytoeducateyourselfisnotdependentonyourfamilybackground,wealth,orgeography.
thepermissionofbanksbeforetheycanactontheiraspirations.Mostofthetoolsandsoftwarenecessarytorunabusinessarenowavailableasarentableservice,allowingyoutoscaletheseupasrequiredorasyourfinancesallow.Yetwearealsoatatimewheremorepeoplethaneverfeellost,depressed,anddirection-less,andthedouble-edgednatureoftechnologymeansthat,aswellasprovidingmoreoppor-tunity,thesenewdigitaltoolsandplatformsofferrabbitholesdownwhichpeoplecanlosethemselves,theirtimeconsumedwithoutgener-atinganythingofvalue.HoursspentscrollingnonsenseonTikTok,watchingYouTubevideos,orplayingonlinegames.Andaswehurtletowardsthemetaverse,andthelinebetweenwhatisrealandwhatisnotblurs,youcanseehowpeoplecouldbecomelostinaworldofdistraction,devoidofaspiration,andgainingwhatlittlefulfilmenttheyhavefromachievingvirtualgoalsinavirtualworldwithvirtualfriends.Ahikikomori6lifeawaitsfartoo 13EDUCATIONHowever,thosewiththerightmindsetcanusetheseverysameplatformsforopportunity,notdistraction,takingadvantageofthemtobroadcasttheirpassion,skills,orknowledgeandattractanaudienceofpeoplewholikewhattheydoandprovidethemwithanincomethroughclicks,views,sponsorship,andproductpurchases.FromvideostreamerstoYouTubecontentcreators,peoplehavebeenabletobuildTocompeteinaworldofmachines,Ibelieveweneedtoteachouryoungpeopleskillsthatareuniquelyhumaninawaythatmakesthemmorelikelytobeabletocraftalifeoftheirchoosinginthecomingdecades.
afanbaseandcreateacareerdoingwhattheylove–somethingthatwouldneverhavebeenpossiblepreviously.Sopeoplenowhaveachoicewhethertodedi-catetheirtimetobecomingacreatororbeingaconsumer,tousethesetoolsandplatformstoenhanceandeducatethemselves,orjustbeentertainedbythem.Anditisinunderstandingthatthisisachoice–acriticalone–andthatitisbothinyourbestintereststomaketherightchoiceandwithinyourcapabilitiestodothis.Helpingstudentstomakebetterchoicesandfindtheirpassioninaworldoflimitlesschoicebutlimiteddirectionshouldthereforebeattheheartoftheeducationjourney.ACURRICULUMFORTHEFUTURESohowcanwehelptheseeducatorstoanswertheprimaryquestion,“HowdoIensurethatmystudentshaveasuccessfullife?”Ibelieveitisinteachingthemtheskillstodevelop14 THEEUROPEANBUSINESSREVIEW NOVEMBER-DECEMBER2022andhonetheabilitytobecomethemasteroftheirowndestinyandnotavictimofcircum-stances.Toanswerthatquestion,Iconsideredmyeducationandthatofmychildrenandthenlookedforwardtowhatwascomingdowntheroad.WhatdoIthinkwouldhavehelpedmychildrenandmetobemoresuccessfulinlife,andwhatdoIthinkwouldhelpfuturegenerations?Tocompeteinaworldofmachines,Ibelieveweneedtoteachouryoungpeopleskillsthatareuniquelyhumaninawaythatmakesthemmorelikelytobeabletocraftalifeoftheirchoosinginthecomingdecades.Thereisobviouslytheneedtoprovidethehighest-possibleteachinginthebasics(theabilitytoreadwell,writewell,anddobasicarithmetic),butitisalsoimportanttounderstandscientificprinciples,gainanunder-standingofsocietyanditshistory(bothgoodandbad),andlearnconceptssuchaspsychologyandphilosophy.However,herearetheadditionalsubjectsIfeelwouldprovidefuturegenerationswiththebestchanceofbeingsuccessfulinthedigitalage:
MindsetdevelopmentNext-generationtechnologyanddatascience/analysisCriticalthinking,decision-making,andrationalityProblem-solving,first-principlesanalysis,solutionsimplification,andsystemsthinking.Innovation,designthinking,andcustomer-centricityCircularity–circularthinking,businessmodels,supplychains,andeconomyLifeskills–communication,collaboration,timeandmoneymanagement,adaptability,entrepreneurship,andhowtocreateandmaintainhealthyrelationshipsanddevelopapositiveself-image.Ratherthangothrougheachoneofthese(fartoolongforasinglearticle,butImightdothisinthenexteditionofTransitionPoint),I’llexpandonthefewthatIthinkwillbeparticularlyusefulinthecomingdecades.WHYMINDSETSCOMEFIRSTIthasbeenoveradecadesinceIfirstreadCarolDweck'sworkonfixedandgrowthmindsetsand,duringthoseyears(especiallyspeakingasaparentwhosesonshavegrownupduringthatperiod),I’vecometorealisejusthowimportantitistothelong-termsuccessandhappinessoftheindividualtolearnhowtotransformafixedmindsetintoagrowthone.Fixed-mindsetpeoplethinkthatintelligenceisfixedandstrugglingisasignofweakness,whereasgrowth-mindsetpeoplebelievethatintelligencecanbedevel-opedandacceptthestruggle,becausetheyrealisethatthisisthemostimportantpartofthelearning 15EDUCATIONEducationhastobemuchmorethantheacquisitionofknowledge;itmustcreateagenerationwhowillinglyseektoputthemselvesintosituationswheretheyareuncomfortableandoutoftheircomfortzone,andacceptthatsuccessrequireseffortanddisciplinedexecution.Fixed-mindsetpeopleareoftenincrediblysmartbutrarelyachievetheirtruepotential,becausetheyavoiduncomfortablesituationswheretheyfeelexposedorwherefailureisanoption.They’drathernottrythantryandfail.Thisisanawfulcombination,becauseitleadstoalifeoffrus-tration;youendupknowingyouwerecapableofmuchmore,butyoujustcouldn’tmotivateyourselftoputthosesmartstogooduse.Inthisworldofendlessopportunity,helpingstudentstoexplorewhattheyarepassionateaboutwhilealsoinvestigatingandexploringwhattheyneedinordertoturnthatpassionintoaviableandfulfillingfuturewouldbeessentiallifeskills.Thereisgreatvalueinteachingstudentshowtodevelopagrowthmindset,onethatvaluescontinuouslearning,wheretheyrealisethattheeffortexpendedisitsownreward.Inaworldwhereeverythingissearchableinaninstant,whereeducationandentrepreneurshiphavebeendemocratised,wherealmosteveryques-tioncouldbeansweredsimplybyaskingSiri,Alexa,oryourownpersonaldigitalcompanion,thentherealskillisinknowingwhatquestionstoask.Yet,askingaquestionrequiresanelementofcuriosity,awillingnesstoacceptnotknowing,andadesiretofindouttheanswer.Knowing“whytolearn”andinspiringthemto“wanttolearn”ismoreimportantthan“whattolearn”.Withouta“why”anda“want”,the“what”hasnopurpose.
