Towns and cities in America had invented the telegraph which could pass information down a wire. This was perfect for

30、 sending messages made up of a series of short dots and long dashes. The code was invented by Samuel Morse. Each letter was made up of a series of dots and dashes and both the sender and the receiver had to be very familiar with the code to be able to understand it. Certain groups are used to show t

31、hings such as End of Message or Error. So a man would begin his message in a standard way (explaining where the message was from and who it was for) and then add the message. It was extremely efficient and was soon used to pass on news of troubles or problems coming to any particular town.Even today

32、 Morse code is used on ships. Sometimes messages are sent by lamps but more often they are sent by the radio officer in his cabin. The German army used a special code which they then sent using Morse code to keep in touch with all its soldiers, airmen and submarines during the war. If the British ha

33、d not been able to translate and understand the German use of Morse code, it is likely that the Second World War would have lasted for at least two more years. So Morse code proved to be both a help to the Germans when they sent their war plans and a help to the British when they found out what thos
