Laura and I are really pleased to be here in New York City, and reallypleased to be able to be here with the Mayor and the Superintendent and our Secretary of Education,and particularly were pleased to be with the students and principals of - the principal and studentsof

2、 PS 76.These are hardworking students who are learning to read and write and add and subtract. Andwe had a chance to visitvt.常去with them and learn about their dreams, and we really appreciateyou all being here. Its exciting for us to be here.Last week the school system here in New York City received

3、 the Broad Prize for Urban Education.This is one of the most prestigious education prizes in the country. The award is given every yearto large urban school districts that have shown the greatest overall a.綜合的n.工作 performanceand improvement in student achievement, while narrowing the achievement gap

4、 amongst poor andminority students.In bestowing this recognition n.認(rèn)出, 識另U;重視on New York City, the Broad Prize Committeehighlighted the citys strong leadership. You know, one of the things thatsinteresting - I bet you Joel will tell you this - that when you find a school that is performingwell, you find a

13、e here. And the reason Im glad theyre standinghere is because all the old folks up here recognize that the future of our country depends on ahigh-quality education for our children. Measuring results gives parents information. If youreinteresting in getting parents involved in your schools, just post your results

Its amazing how it gets a parents attention when the schools arent meeting expectations.A system that doesnt hold people to account assumes that certain children cannot learn, andthat its acceptable to shuffle them through school. Well, thats not acceptable in America, toshuffl

19、0,000 students from every statehave been tested. Theyve been tested in math and reading, and here are the results. In math, thescores for 4th and 8th graders were higher than theyve ever been. 20、that someof the achievement gaps amongst African Americans and Hispanic students are narrowing. 22、ngthen the No Child Left Behind Act. The act is working; Congress needs to reauthorize it andmake it better. And Secretary Spellings is going to be on Capitol Hill to explainwhy these pr

I believe student achievement willbe enhanced when families with children stu
