文檔簡介
2012BBarditch High School decided to an All-School Reunion. Over 450 people came to the event. There were tours of the old school building and a picnic at Confederate Park. Several former teachers were on hands to tell stories about the old days. Ms. Mabel Yates, the English teacher for fifty years, was wheeled to the Park. Some eyes rolled and there were a few low groans(嘟囔聲)when Ms.Yates was about to speak. Many started looking at their watches and coming up with excuses to be anywhere instead of preparing to listen to a lecture from and old woman who had few kind words for her students and made them work harder than all the other teachers combined. Then Ms. Yates started to speak:“I cant tell you how pleased I am to be here. I havent seen many of you since your graduation, but I have followed your careers and enjoyed your victories as well as crying for your tragedies. I have a large collection of newspaper photographs of my students. Although I havent appeared in person, I have attended your college graduations, weddings and even the birth your children, in my imagination.”Ms. Yates paused and started crying a bit. Then she continued:“It was my belief that if I pushed you as hard as I could, some of you would succeed to please me and others would succeed to annoy me. Regardless of our motives, I can see that you have all been successful in you chosen path.”“There is no greater comfort for an educator than to see the end result of his or her years of work. You have all been a great source of pleasure and pride for me and I want you to know I love you all from the bottom of my heart.”There was a silence over the crowd for a few seconds and then someone started clapping. I was a bright-eyed ghl heading off to Howard University, aiming at a legal career and dreaming of sitting on a Supreme Court bench somewhere. Twenty-one years later I am later I am still a bright-eyed dreamer and one with quite a different tale to tell. My grandma, an amazing woman, graduated from college an the age of 65. She was the first in our family to reach that goal. But one year after I started college, she developed cancer. I made the choice to withdraw from college to care for her. It meant that school and my personal dream would have to wait. Then I got married with another dream: building my family with a combination of adopt and biological children. I spend a great deal of my time thinking about the power of languagethe way it can evoke(喚起) an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth. Language is the tool of my trade. And I use them allall the Englishes I grew up with.Born into a Chinese family that had recently arrived in California, Ive been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like others, I have described it to people as “broken” English. But feel embarrassed to say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no way to describe it other than “broken”, as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness. Ive heard other terms used, “l(fā)imited English,” for example. But they seem just as bad, as if everything is limited, including peoples perceptions(認(rèn)識(shí))of the limited English speaker.I know this for a fact, because when I was growing up, my mothers “l(fā)imited” English limited my perception of her. I was ashamed of her English. I believed that her English reflected the quality of what she had to say. That is ,because she expressed them imperfectly her thoughts were imperfect. And I had plenty of evidence to support me: the fact that people in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, did not give her good service, pretended not to understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.I started writing fiction in 1985. And for reasons I wont get into today, I began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with: the English she used with me, which for lack of a better term might be described as “broken”, and what I imagine to be her translation of her Chinese, her internal(內(nèi)在的) language, and for that I sought to preserve the essence, but neither an English nor a Chinese structure: I wanted to catch what language ability tests can never show; her intention, her feelings, the rhythms of her speech and the nature of her thoughts.41. By saying “Language is the tool of my trade”, the author means that _.A. she uses English in foreign tradeB. she is fascinated by languagesC. she works as a translatorD. she is a writer by profession42. Americans do not understand broken English.B. The authors mother was not respected sometimes.C. The author mother had positive influence on her.D. Broken English always reflects imperfect thoughts.44. The author gradually realizes her mothers English is _.A. well structuredB. in the old styleC. easy to translateD. rich in meaning45. What is the passage mainly about?A. The changes of the authors attitude to her mothers English.B. The limitation of the authors perception of her mother.C. The authors misunderstanding of “l(fā)imited” English.D. The authors experiences of using broken English.41.D推理理解題?! 2008B I love charity (慈善) shops and so do lots of other people in Britain because you find quite a few of them on every high street. The charity shop is a British institution, selling everything from clothes to electric goods, all at very good prices. You can get things you wont find in the shops anymore. The thing I like best about them is that your money is going to a good cause and not into the pockets of profit-driven companies, and you are not damaging the planet, but finding a new home for unwanted goods. The first charity shop was opened in 1947 by Oxfam. The famous charitys appeal to aid postwar Greece had been so successful it had been flooded with donations (捐贈(zèng)物). They decided to set up a shop to sell some of these donations to raise money for that appeal. Now there are over 7,000 charity shops in the UK. My favourite charity shop in my hometown is the Red Cross shop, where I always find childrens books, all 10 or 20 pence each. Most of the people working in the charity shops are volunteers, although there is often a manager who gets paid. Over 90% of the goods in the charity shops are donated by the public. Every morning you see bags of unwanted items outside the front of shops, although they dont encourage this, rather ask people to bring things in when the shop is open. The shops have very low running costs: all profits go to charity work. Charity shops raise more than 110 million a year, funding (資助) medical research, overseas aid, supporting sick and poor children, homeless and disabled people, and much more. What better place to spend your money? You get something special for a very good price and a good moral sense. You provide funds to a good cause and tread lightly on the environment.40. The author loves the charity shop mainly because of _.A. its convenient location B. its great variety of goodsC. its spirit of goodwill D. its nice shopping environment41. The first charity shop in the UK was set up to _.A. sell cheap products B. deal with unwanted thingsC. raise money for patients D. help a foreign country42. Which of the following is TRUE about charity shops?A. The operating costs are very low. B. The staff are usually well paid.C. 90% of the donations are second-hand. D. They are open twenty-four hours a day.43. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?A. What to Buy a Charity Shops. B. Charity Shop: Its Origin & Development.C. Charity Shop: Where You Buy to Donate. D. A42. 事實(shí)細(xì)節(jié)題。由第四段第一句The shops have very low running costs”可知A項(xiàng)正確。 由a good moral sense (好的道德感)和You provide funds to a good cause(你為一項(xiàng)有意義的事業(yè)提供資金)可知 C項(xiàng)為最好題目。Charity Shop: Where You Buy To Donate.
