Nearly blind, and requiring oxygen, she never left her bedside. I soon learned, though, that she loved books, and every day after work I would read to her. In dim light we made our way through “King Lear,” “Henry IV,” “Jane Eyre,” the poems of Rupert Brooke. Two golden hours might pass before Id pack up to return to my apartment. Before I could leave shed press my hand, saying, “Child my literary child. You bring me such joy.” Elizabeths husband died a decade earlier, and their only child, a daughter, was distant for what heartbreaking reason I never knew. One day an old friend of hers visited and brought her some soup. Smiling broadly, Elizabeth squeezed my arm. “Tomorrow, child, we shall feast.” The next evening I found Elizabeths bed empty. “Im sorry,” the nurse whispered. She handed me a box and nodded. “She left everything to you.” At home, I unpacked it, finding two white sweaters, the dozen leather-bound books and, at the bottom, the can of soup. That summer I decided my path. I returned to school to study literature. And for 26 years the soup has stayed in my kitchen. It remained unopened and now is rusted(生銹的). The African elephant used to be found all over Africa and the Asian elephant moved from Syria to China to Indonesia. Nowadays, elephants are found in small groups in the south of the Sahara Desert and scarcely in Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka and India. In the early twentieth century, there were close to ten million elephants, and now the elephant number is as low as 252,000 and expected to drop down to 160,000 by 2025. Between xx and xx, the elephant population fell by at least 30%, or 144,000 elephants. As researchers have traveled over the African plains, they only spotted one herd of 36 elephants in an area like the size of Mexico. It is clear that these gentle mammals are disappearing right before our eyes. There are many reasons why the elephant population has been decreasing, one of which is their habitat. Humans are peting with elephants for living space, and as more and more humans clear the land that is being used by elephants, the elephants have less space. Elephant hunting or poaching has been a major factor for the disappearance of this species, and they are killed only for their valuable ivory tusks. Although the trade of tusks is illegal, it is still a mon practice in many places. Often, all the local people living among elephants would be farmers, and found that they could make more money by selling the tusks of one elephant, than doing manual labor for twelve years. That alone makes it really hard to prevent them from killing the elephants. Some places such as Botswana, have put in extra effort to protect their wildlife from poachers by founding their Botswana Defense Force, which is made up of around 700 specially-trained soldiers that are stationed in 40 different areas. You may feel worried about the present situations elephants are in, but there are ways to help. Educators, as well, acknowledge that making friends is one of the most valuable things children do as they learn and grow. But many parents are perplexed by their childrens social lives, wondering how to help their kids cope with the challenges, heartbreaks, and the joys of making friends, losing them, and making friends again. “Friendships help children gradually learn to be independent, contributing members of a munity and its just as important as their academic growth” notes Diane Levin, Ph.D., author of “Remote Control Childhood.” However, its a slow process. There are many social skills to learn, which advance with age and experience, trial and error, and experiencing the satisfaction that es from contributing to an ongoing friendship.” “Friendship starts as soon as children can crawl off their parents laps over to another child,” adds Michael Thompson, Ph.D., co-author of her life with you to her life with her friends. but who their friends are, how they interact with them, and how popular they are, is something parents have only limited control over.” Experts on childrens behavior say that problems like jealousies, breakups, bullying and teasing account for a big part of what parents, kids and teachers talk about, and what parents worry about. Get insights into how childrens friendships develop and how parents can help, if needed, and find ways to determine if your child is at risk for serious social problems or simply suffering from real (but mon) social challenges. 32.
