TheOilCompaniesInternationalMarineForum(OCIMF)hasbeenattheforefrontofthedriveto

implementacommonoffshorevesselinspectionprocessthroughitsintroductionoftheOffshore

VesselInspectionDatabase(OVID)system.Thissystempromotesaunifbnnlyhighstandardof

commoninspections.Membercompaniescanusetheresultswithintheirownvettingsystems,

therebyreducingthenumberofinspectionsthateachvesselundergoes.

Coderequiresvesseloperatorstoimplementasafetymanagementsystemthatwillhelpthemto

achieveincident-freeoperations.However,thereisacleardistinctionbetweenthestandardsof

thosevesseloperatorswhoembracethespiritoftheISMCodeandthosewhoaimtofulfillonly

itsminimumrequirements.Thisvariabilitymayresultinachartererwithdue-diligenceconcerns

havingtoassesstheoperationalstandardsofindividualvesseloperators.

includingtechnical,operational,personnelandHSE,bothonboardandashore.Itshouldbe

notedthattherangeofdifferentoffshorevesselsandunitsarecommonlyreferredtoas

'vessels'throughoutthisGuide.
