Learningaforeignlanguagewasoneofthemostdifficultyes
mostrewardingexperiences.Althoughattimes,learningalanguage
wasfrustrating,itwaswellworththeeffort.Injuniormiddleschool,
myforeignlanguageteacherpraisedallofthestudents.Ibenefitalot
fromthispositiveteachingmethod.Inseniormiddleschool,theteacher
alwayspunishedthosewhogaveincorrectanswers.SoIlostmyjoyin
answeringquestionsandmydesiretosayanythingatallinEnglish.In
college,Ihadnoopportunitytospeakinclass.Ifeltintimidated.Online
learningchangedeverything.Althoughitrequiresmuchtime,
commitmentanddisciplinetokeepupwiththeflowofthecourse,I
succeededinforeignlanguagelearning.Learningaforeignlanguage
hadbeenamosttryingexperience.Ihavelearntinsightsintoanother
cultureaswellasthelanguagepoints.

Mostexperiencedreaderstrytoguessthemeaningofunfamiliar
wordsthroughcontextclues.Inordertomakemeaningsclear,good
writersoftenprovideorgivesuchcluesforreaders.Itisalwaysagood
ideatolearnthedifferentkindsofcluesyoumightcomeacrossinyour
reading.
Herearesomeofthecontextclues:
1.Somesentencessetoffthedefinitionforadifficultwordby
usingpunctuation.
2.Sometimeshelpingwords,alongwithpunctuation,provide
importantclues.
3.Somesentencestelltheoppositeofwhatanewwordsmeans.
Fromitsopposite,youcanfigureoutthemeaningoftheword.
4.Sometimesyoucanuseyourownexperiencestofigureoutthe
definitionaword.
5.Sentencesbeforeorafterasentencethathasadifficultword
sometimesexplainthemeaningoftheword.
6.Somesentencesarewrittenjusttogivethedefinitionsofthe
difficultwords—wordsthatreaderswillneedtoknowinorderto
understandwhattheyarereading.

從后面的解釋中我們可以了解到brittle是“脆”的意思。

middleofherfirstclass.but一詞表轉(zhuǎn)折,因此其前后的意思正相反。后半句
的意思是她今天“第一節(jié)上了一半才來”,因此反向推理,可得出她平時一向
“準(zhǔn)時”的結(jié)論。

possibility是possible的同根名詞,據(jù)此可以斷定possibility意
思是“可能性”。
