kids,theyremostlikelytoanswerwithpro-skateboarder,surferorminecraftplayer.iaskedmylittlebrother,andhesaid,seriouslydude,im10,ihavenoidea,probablyapro-skier,letsgogetsomeicecream.

see,uskidsaregoingtoanswersomethingwerestokedon,whatwethinkiscool,whatwehaveexperiencewith,andthatstypicallytheoppositeofwhatadultswanttohear.

butifyouaskalittlekid,sometimesyoullgetthebestanswer,somethingsosimple,soobviousandreallyprofound.whenigrowup,iwanttobehappy.

forme,whenigrowup,iwanttocontinuetobehappylikeiamnow.imstokedtobehereattedex,imean,ivebeenwatchingtedvideosforaslongasicanremember,butineverthoughtidmakeitonthestageheresosoon.imean,ijustbecameateenager,andlikemostteenageboys,ispendmostofmytimewondering,howdidmyroomgetsomessyallonitsown.

diditakeashowertoday?andthemostperplexingofall,howdoigetgirlstolikeme?neurosciencessaythattheteenagebrainisprettyweird,ourprefrontalcortexisunderdeveloped,butweactuallyhavemoreneuronsthanadults,whichiswhywecanbesocreative,andimpulsiveandmoodyandgetbummedout.

butwhatbumsmeoutistoknowthat,alotofkidstodayarejustwishingtobehappy,tobehealthy,tobesafe,notbullied,andbelovedforwhotheyare.soitseemstomewhenadultssay,whatdoyouwanttobewhenyougrowup?theyjustassumethatyoullautomaticallybehappyandhealthy.

well,maybethatsnotthecase,gotoschool,gotocollege,getajob,getmarried,boom,thenyoullbehappy,right?youdontseemtomakelearninghowtobehappyandhealthyapriorityinourschools,itsseparatefromschools.andforsomekids,itdoesntexistsatall?butwhatifwedidntmakeitseparate?whatifwebasededucationonthestudyandpracticeofbeinghappyandhealthy,becausethatswhatitis,apractice,andasimplepracticeatthat?

educationisimportant,butwhyisbeinghappyandhealthynotconsiderededucation,ijustdontgetit.soivebeenstudyingthescienceofbeinghappyandhealthy.itreallycomesdowntopracticingtheseeightthings.exercise,dietandnutrition,timeinnature,contribution,servicetoothers,relationships,recreation,relaxationandstressmanagement,andreligiousorspiritualinvolvement,yes,gotthatone.

sotheseeightthingscomefromdr.rogerwalsh,hecallsthemtherapeuticlifestylechangesortlcsforshort.heisascientistthatstudieshowtobehappyandhealthy.inresearchingthistalk,igotachancetoaskhimafewquestionslike;doyouthinkthatourschoolstodayaremakingtheseeighttlcsapriority?hisresponsewasnosurprise,itwasessentiallyno.buthedidsaythatmanypeopledotrytogetthiskindofeducationoutsideofthetraditionalarena,throughreadingandpracticessuchasmeditationoryoga.

butwhatithoughtwashisbestresponsewasthat,muchofeducationisorientedforbetterorworsetowardsmakingalivingratherthanmakingalife.

inXX,sirkenrobinsongavethemostpopulartedtalkofalltime.schoolskillcreativity.hismessageisthatcreativityisasimportantasliteracy,andweshouldtreatitwiththesamestatus.

alotofparentswatchedthosevideos,someofthoseparentslikeminecounteditasoneofthereasonstheyfeltconfidenttopulltheirkidsfromtraditionalschooltotrysomethingdifferent.irealizedimpartofthissmall,butgrowingrevolutionofkidswhoaregoingabouttheireducationdifferently,andyouknowwhat?itfreaksalotofpeopleout.

eventhoughiwasonlynine,whenmyparentspulledmeoutoftheschoolsystem,icanstillremembermymombeingintearswhensomeofherfriendstoldhershewascrazyanditwasastupididea.

lookingback,imthankfulshedidntcavetopeerpressure,andithinksheistoo.so,outofthe200millionpeoplethathavewatchedsirkenrobinsonstalk,whyarenttheremorekidslikemeoutthere?

shanemcconkeyismyhero.ilovedhimbecausehewastheworldsbestskier.butthen,onedayirealizedwhatireallylovedaboutshane,hewasahacker.notacomputerhacker,hehackedskiing.hiscreativityandinventionsmadeskiingwhatitistoday,andwhyilovetoski.alotofpeoplethinkofhackersasgeekycomputernerdswholiveintheirparentsbasementandspreadcomputerviruses,butidontseeitthatway.

hackersareinnovators,hackersarepeoplewhochallengeandchangethesystemstomakethemworkdifferently,tomakethemworkbetter,itsjusthowtheythink,itsamindset.

imgrowingupinaworldthatneedsmorepeoplewiththehackermindset,andnotjustfortechnology,everythingisupforbeinghacked,evenskiing,eveneducation.sowhetheritsstevejobs,markzuckerbergorshanemcconkeyhavingthehackermindsetcanchangetheworld.

healthy,happy,creativityinthehackermindsetareallalargepartofmyeducation.icallithackschooling,idontuseanyoneparticularcurriculum,andimnotdedicatedtoanyoneparticularapproach,ihackmyeducation.

itakeadvantageofopportunitiesinmycommunity,andthroughanetworkofmyfriendsandfamily.itakeadvantageofopportunitiestoexperiencewhatimlearning,andimnotafraidtolookforshortcutsorhackstogetabetterfasterresult.itslikearemixoramash-upoflearning.itsflexible,opportunistic,anditneverlosessightofmakinghappy,healthyandcreativityapriority.

andhereisthecoolpart,becauseitsamindset,notasystem.hackschoolingcanbeusedanyone,eventraditionalschools.soowhatdoesmyschoollooklike?well,itlookslikestarbucksalotofthetime,butlikemostkidsistudylotofmath,science,historyandwriting.ididntusedtoliketowritebecausemyteachersmademewriteaboutbutterfliesandrainbows,andiwantedtowriteaboutskiing.

itwasareliefformygoodfriendsmom,startedthesquawvalleykidsinstitute,whereigottowritethroughmyexperiencesandmyinterests,while,connectingwithgreatspeakersfromaroundthenation,andthatsparkedmyloveofwriting.

irealizedthatonceyouremotivatedtolearnsomething,youcangetalotdoneinashortamountoftime,andonyourown,starbucksisprettygreatforthat.hackingphysicswasfun,welearnedallaboutnewtonandgalileo,andweexperiencedsomebasicphysicsconceptslikekineticenergythroughexperimentingandmakingmistakes.

myfavoritewasthegiantnewtonscradlethatwemadeoutofbowlingballs,nobocceballs.weexperimentedwithlotofotherthingslikebowlingballsandeventgiantjawbreakers.

projectdiscoverysropescourseisawesome,andslightlystressful.whenyoure60feetofftheground,youhavetolearnhowtohandleyourfears,communicateclearly,andmostimportantly,trusteachother.

communityorganizationsplayabigpartinmyeducation,highfivesfoundationsbasicsprogrambeingawareandsafeincriticalsituations.wespentadaywiththesquawvalleyskipatroltolearnmoreaboutmountainsafety,thenthenextdayweswitchedtoscienceofsnow,weatherandavalanches.

butmostimportantly,welearnedthatmakingbaddecisionsputsyouandyourfriendsatrisk.youngshouldtalk,wellbringshistorytolife.youstudyafamouscharacterinhistory,andsothatyoucanstandonstageandperformasthatcharacter,andansweranyquestionabouttheirlifetime.

inthisphoto,youseealcaponeandbobmarleygettinggrilledwithquestionsatthehistoricalpipersoperahouseinvirginiacity,thesamestagewhereharryhoudinigothisstart.

timeandnatureisreallyimportanttome,itscalm,quietandigettojustlogoutofreality.ispendonedayaweek,outsideallday.atmyfoxwalkersclasses,ourgoalistobeabletosurviveinthewildernesswithjustaknife.welearntolistentonature,welearntosenseoursurroundings,andivegainedaspiritualconnectiontonaturethat,ineverknewexisted.
