There'sasilverlining.AsIsaac-Mohrpointsout,increasedselectivitymeans

betterstudentsaregoingtoallcolleges,broadeningyourchoiceofschools

withahigh-achievingstudentpopulation.

Thenumberofapplicantsisrising,makingadmissionmorecompetitive.Ann

Wright,VicePresidentforEnrollmentatRiceUniversityinTexas,agrees.

"Therearelotsofschoolswherestudentscanbehappyandsuccessful,"she

says.Bothexpertsencouragestudentsandparentstoconsiderarangeof

schools,ratherthanfocusingonasingleinstitution.

Communitycolleges,forexample,canallowyoutospendtwoyears

improvinggradesorselectingacareerfocusbeforetransferringtoafour-year

university.Whileyoumightbetaughtbyagraduatestudentatalarge

university,teachersatcommunitycollegesareusuallyprofessorswho

primarilywanttoteach,notconductresearch.

Smallerclasssizesandmoreaccesstoprofessorsatsmallpublicorprivate

appeartobethickeningasaresultofsnowfallincreases,butthePeninsulais

thinningatanalarmingrateduetowarming.TheWestAntarcticsheetisalso

TemperaturesinthePeninsulaappeartobeincreasingataroundtwicethe

globalaverage-about2℃overthelast50years.Thosefiguresarebasedon

vastmajorityofglaciersalongthePeninsula-87%ofthe244studied—are

makemuchdifferencetoglobalsealevels-perhapsafewcentimeters.

Moreworrying,potentially,arethevasticesheetscoveringtherestof

Antarctica.Makingtemperaturemeasurementsforthecontinentasawholeis

difficult;itisavastplace-morethan2,000kmacross-therearefew

researchstations,andtemperaturesvarynaturallyby2~3℃fromyearto

year.Butmeasurementsindicatethatinthewest,meltingisunderway.

"Aboutone-thirdoftheWestAntarcticicesheetisthinning,"saysDr.

Vaughan,"onaveragebyabout10cmperyear,butintheworstplacesby3~

4mperyear."

TherockonwhichtheWestAntarcticicerestsisbelowsealevel,andBritish

AntarcticSurveyresearchersbelievethethinningcouldbeduetotheicesheet

meltingonitsunderside.
