consistedinlargepartofnewspaperreviews.Toreadsuchbookstodayistomarvelatthefactthat

WeareevenfartherremovedfromtheunfocusednewspaperreviewspublishedinEngland
betweentheturnofthe20thcenturyandtheeveofWorldWarII,atatimewhennewsprintwas

ofmedia,notinterpersonal,influence-eventhemostinfluentialmembersofapopulationsimply
don'tinteractwiththatmanyothers.Yetitispreciselythesenon-celebrityinfluentialswho,
accordingtothetwo-step-flowtheory,aresupposedtodrivesocialepidemicsbyinfluencingtheir

Unfortunately,banks'lobbyingnowseemstobeworking.Thedetailsmaybeunknowable,
buttheindependenceofstandard-setters,essentialtotheproperfunctioningofcapitalmarkets,is
beingcompromised.And,unlessbankscarrytoxicassetsatpricesthatattractbuyers,revivingthe
bankingsystemwillbedifficult.
AfterabruisingencounterwithCongress,America'sFinancialAccountingStandardsBoard
(FASB)rushedthroughrulechanges.Thesegavebanksmorefreedomtousemodelstovalue
illiquidassetsandmoreflexibilityinrecognizinglossesonlong-termassetsintheirincome
