schoolingisreallynottheanswertothecurrent"boycrisis"ineducation.BrainandCognitiveThesecondlineofresearchoftenusedtojustifysingle-educationfallssquarelywithinmyareaofexpertise:brainandcognitivedevelopment.It'sbeenmorethanadecadenowsethe"brainmovement"beganinfiltratingourschools,andtherearelillyhundredsofschoolscaughtupinthefad(新潮).PublicschoolsinWisconsin,na,Floridaandmanyotherstatesnowproudlydeclareontheirwebsitesthattheyseparateboysandgirlsbecause"researchbrains,eyes,ears,autonomicnervoussystems,andmore.Allofthesestatementscanbetracedtojustafewwould-beneuroscientists,especiallyphysicianLeonardSaxandtheMichaelGurian.Eachgiveslectures,runsconferences,anddoesalotofprofessionaldevelopmentonso-called"gender-specificlearning."[yzedtheirvariousaboutdifferencesinhearing,vision,language,math,stressresponses,and"learningstyles"inmybookandalongpeer-reviewedpaper.Otherneuroscientistsandlanguage,math,physics,andeveryothersubjectdon'tdifferbetweenboysandgirls.Ofcourse,isfargreaterwithinpopulationsofboysorgirlsthanbetweenthetwoes.TheequalprotectionclauseoftheUSConstitutionprohibitsseparationofstudentsinpubliceducationthat'sbasedonpreciselythiskindof"overbroadgeneralizationsabouttheisbecauseitleadsfartooeasilytostereotyanddiscrimination.SocialDevelopmentalThatbrinetothethirdareaofresearchwhichfailstosupportsingle-schoolingsuggeststhepracticeisactuallyharmful:socialdevelopmentalIt'sawell-provenfindinginsocialpsychologythatsegregationpromotesstereotyandprejudice,whereasintergroupcontactreducesthem--andtheresultsarethesamewhetheryoudividegroupsbyrace,age,gender,bodymassindex, whiightbeexinedbythelackofopportunitytolearnaboutrelationshipsduringtheirformativeyears.Whetherinnurseryschool,highschool,orthebusinessworld,gendersegregationnarrowsourperceptionsofeachother,facilitatingstereotyandistattitudes.It'sverysimple:themorewestructurechildrenandadolescents'environmentaroundgenderdisttionsandseparation,themoretheywillusethesecategoriesastheprimarybasisforunderstandingthemselvesandGenderisanimportsueineducation.Therearegapsinreading,writing,andscienceachievementthatshouldbenarrower.Therearegapsareerchoicethatshouldbenarrower--ifwereallywanttoizehumanpotentialandAmericaneconomicgrowth.Butstereotyboysandgirlsandseoaratingtheminthenameoffictitiousbraindifferencesisnevergoingtoclosethesegaps.HundredsofschoolsseparateboysfromgirlslassontheallegedbrainandcognitiveAreviewofextensiveeducationalresearchshowsnoobviousacademicadvantageofsingle-Theauthordidnothaveanyfixedideasonsingle-
