Withaheavysigh,Tombroughtthecartoastop,restinghisheadonthesteeringwheel,defeated!Afterafewseconds,helookedupandpeeredoutofthewindow.Therainseemedtohaveeasedalittle,andinthedistance,hecouldseealighttwinklingintheblackness.Withasenseofhopefulanticipation,Tomgentlyeasedthecartowardsthelight.Ashegotcloser,hecouldseealongdrivewayleadingtoasolitaryhouse.

湯姆瞥了一眼后視鏡,里面能看到后座上他的輪椅。他很快低下頭,看了看自己瘦弱的斷腿。一陣熟悉的絕望感像個(gè)浪頭一樣從上面向他襲來(lái)。暴雨還在敲打著車(chē)頂,他覺(jué)得自己就像被困在一面鼓里。外面的世界將他緊緊包裹,他大口喘著粗氣。突然間一聲巨響,把他從絕望中震醒了,車(chē)子頓時(shí)顛簸起來(lái)?!暗?,”他心說(shuō),“車(chē)胎爆了。”

湯姆長(zhǎng)嘆一口氣,把車(chē)停了,一頭趴在方向盤(pán)上,真是太沮喪了!過(guò)了幾秒鐘,他抬起頭往窗外張望。雨似乎小了一點(diǎn)兒,遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)地,黑暗中隱約可見(jiàn)一團(tuán)忽明忽暗的燈光。湯姆心中燃起一絲希望,朝著燈光小心翼翼地慢慢駛?cè)???拷倏磿r(shí),發(fā)現(xiàn)有一條長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的車(chē)道,通向一座孤零零的房子。

“Waitaminute,”thegirlreplied.Sheturnedandwentintothehouse.Afewminuteslater,shereturnedwithanoldman.Thegirlheldhisarmandsmiledlovinglyupathim.

“HowcanIhelp”theoldmanaskedwithasmileonhisface.

Tomexplainedtheproblemandadded,“Ineedhelpbecausemylegsareparalysed.”Thewordscameoutflat.Buthedidnotknowhowelsehecouldconveythefactthatheneededhelpfromthisweakoldmaninthemiddleoftherainstorm.TheoldmansimplynoddedhisheadandaskedTomtoopenthebootofhiscar.Withthehelpofhisyoungassistant,theoldmanquicklygottowork.Occasionally,Tomleanedoutofthewindowtoseehowtheyweredoingwiththerepairs.Thetwowereconcentratingontheirwork,andtherainwassoakingthem.Onceagain,Tomcouldn’thelpbutfeelhewasuseless.

湯姆駛近那房子,見(jiàn)門(mén)口站著一個(gè)十歲左右的小女孩。他把車(chē)盡量靠近女孩停下來(lái),搖下車(chē)窗?!澳愀改冈诩覇帷睘榱嗣獾寐曇舯伙L(fēng)雨蓋住,他提高了嗓門(mén)。他又補(bǔ)充說(shuō):“我車(chē)胎爆了,需要人幫忙?!?/p>

“稍等一會(huì)兒。”女孩回答。說(shuō)完轉(zhuǎn)身進(jìn)了家門(mén)。幾分鐘后,她回來(lái)了,還帶來(lái)一位老人。女孩挽著老人的胳膊,沖他甜美地笑著。

“需要幫忙嗎?”老人面帶笑容地問(wèn)他。

湯姆把情況講了一下,又說(shuō):“我兩腿癱瘓,所以需要人幫忙?!痹捳f(shuō)得有點(diǎn)直白。不過(guò),他確實(shí)需要這位年邁體衰的老人頂著暴風(fēng)雨幫幫他,他不知道還能怎么說(shuō)來(lái)表達(dá)這個(gè)意思。老人只是點(diǎn)點(diǎn)頭,讓湯姆把車(chē)子后備箱打開(kāi)。很快,老人開(kāi)始干活兒了,女孩給他打下手。湯姆有時(shí)會(huì)探出頭來(lái),看看他們修得怎么樣了。兩個(gè)人聚精會(huì)神地忙活著,身子都被雨水澆透了。湯姆不由得又一次感覺(jué)自己很沒(méi)用。

Tomeasedhiscardownthedrivewayandbackontotheroad.Therainwasnowonlyalightmist,revealingtheroadahead.Ashedrovethroughthenight,hefoundhimselflookingforwardtothejourneyahead.

不久,老人走到車(chē)窗前?!岸寂昧恕!彼f(shuō)。湯姆把準(zhǔn)備好的錢(qián)遞給老人,但他卻沒(méi)有要接的意思。

最后,小女孩說(shuō)了一句:“爺爺他看不見(jiàn)?!?/p>

湯姆不知該說(shuō)什么好。沒(méi)別的辦法,他只能一邊朝祖孫倆打著手勢(shì),一邊結(jié)結(jié)巴巴地解釋自己想付些錢(qián),對(duì)他們的幫助略表謝意。

老人在他臉前擺了擺手說(shuō):“用不著。回家路上注意安全,把善意傳遞下去,這就夠了。”

湯姆開(kāi)著車(chē),慢慢沿車(chē)道返回大路?,F(xiàn)在只剩下一點(diǎn)蒙蒙雨霧,能看清前面的路了。車(chē)在夜色中行進(jìn),他感覺(jué)自己對(duì)前路充滿了期待。
