“HowcanIhelp”theoldmanaskedwithasmileonhisface.

Tomexplainedtheproblemandadded,“Ineedhelpbecausemylegsareparalysed.”Thewordscameoutflat.Buthedidnotknowhowelsehecouldconveythefactthatheneededhelpfromthisweakoldmaninthemiddleoftherainstorm.TheoldmansimplynoddedhisheadandaskedTomtoopenthebootofhiscar.Withthehelpofhisyoungassistant,theoldmanquicklygottowork.Occasionally,Tomleanedoutofthewindowtoseehowtheyweredoingwiththerepairs.Thetwowereconcentratingontheirwork,andtherainwassoakingthem.Onceagain,Tomcouldn’thelpbutfeelhewasuseless.

“需要幫忙嗎？”老人面帶笑容地問(wèn)他。

湯姆把情況講了一下，又說(shuō)：“我兩腿癱瘓，所以需要人幫忙?！痹捳f(shuō)得有點(diǎn)直白。不過(guò)，他確實(shí)需要這位年邁體衰的老人頂著暴風(fēng)雨幫幫他，他不知道還能怎么說(shuō)來(lái)表達(dá)這個(gè)意思。老人只是點(diǎn)點(diǎn)頭，讓湯姆把車(chē)子后備箱打開(kāi)。很快，老人開(kāi)始干活兒了，女孩給他打下手。湯姆有時(shí)會(huì)探出頭來(lái)，看看他們修得怎么樣了。兩個(gè)人聚精會(huì)神地忙活著，身子都被雨水澆透了。湯姆不由得又一次感覺(jué)自己很沒(méi)用。
