IntellectualDisability

APeoplewithintellectualdisabilityformoneofthelargestsingledisabilitygroups

inacommunity.Intellectualdisabilityreferstoageneralslownesstolearnand

functionwithinsociety,andtheidentificationofintellectualdisabilityisusuallybased

onanassessmentofaperson'sperformanceinavarietyoftests.Anindividuafslevel

ofperformance,asassessed,canchangewithtimeandcircumstances.Withskilled

trainingandopportunityfordevelopment,peoplewithintellectualdisabilityhave

muchgreaterpotentialfbracquiringskillsandforparticipationincommunitylifethan

previouslyhadbeenthoughtpossible.

BInmanywesternsocieties,fivecategoriesofintellectualdisabilityhave

traditionallybeenusedinordertoindicatetheperceiveddegreeofdifficultyan

individualhaswithlearning.Allfivemayoccurineitherchildren,adolescentoradult,

andshowasmild,moderate,severe,profoundormultipleintellectualdisability.

CForthemajorityofintellectualdisabilities,thereisnoidentifiablecausebut

therearesomecausesthatarewelldocumented.Theyinclude:braindamageatbirth

duetolackofoxygen---prolongedlaborduringchildbirth;braindamagebeforebirth

duetofactorssuchasrubella,drugordiet-relatedproblems;damageafterbirthdueto

illnessessuchasencephalitisoraccident;hereditarydefectsinthegenes;abnormal

chromosomecountresultingin,forexample,DownSyndrome.

DLikeeveryoneelse,peoplewithanintellectualdisabilityneedarewardingjob,a

satisfyingplacetoliveandagoodsociallife.Buttheymayneedextrasupportto

achievethesethings.Goodsupportservicesarebasedontheprincipleof

normalization---whichmeansenablingpeopletobepartofthecommunitylike

everyoneelse.

EWiththeintroductionoftheintellectuallydisabledintocommunities,thereisa

needtopromoteawarenessofcommunication.Althoughmanypeoplemayhavelittle

experienceintalkingwithanintellectuallydisabledperson,therearecommon

guidelinesthatcansimplifytheinteraction.Firstly,itisusefultorememberthat
