Carnival

Carnivalisanameforanykindofrevelryorfestivity.Bytradition,itistheseasonjustbeforeLentcelebratedbymerrymaking,processions,dancing,andfeasting.DuringCarnivalweekmaskedballs,processionsofdecoratedfloatsthroughthestreets,costumeparades,andfeastinggenerallymarkthecelebration.

Theword“carnival”probablycomesfromthemedievalLatincarnelevarium,meaningtotakeawayorremovemeat(inthepast,Catholicswereforbiddentoeatmeatduringthe40daysofLent).Thefirstdayofthecarnivalseasonvariesfromcountrytocountry.MardiGras,FatTuesday,fromthecustomofusingupmeatandfatsinthehomebeforeLent,hereinSpainisFatThursday.

Carnivaliscelebratedinthewinterseason.FormanyCatalansinBarcelonathiswasoneofthebestdemonstrationsoftheirfreedom,toshowthatthecitywastheirsagain.(ItwasforbiddentocelebrateCarnivalinBarcelonabetween1936and1980,begunduringthetimeofGeneralFranco).

Inmanycountriescarnivaliscelebratedonthestreetsandpeoplemakebigcolourfulprocessionsandlotsofnoise.Somepeoplerideonfloatsandhavefun.Theythrowconfettiandpaperstreamersatoneanother.Carnivaliscelebratedincities,inthecountryandinvillages,butitismostpopularinthebigtownsandcities.Itiscelebratedbypaintingfaces,orwearingmasks,aswellasadisguiseorfancydresscostume.Peoplegoonparadesandsometimesorganiseparties.

InSpainthereareShrovetide(Carnival)festivitiesnoteworthyfortheirbrillanceandspectacularitysuchasCadiz,withitschoruses,fancy-dressprocessions,jokes,disguisesandfloatparades.

InthefaceofthosetheorieswhichbestowanoutrightpagancharacteruponShrovetide,tracingitsentimologybacktothe“currusnevalis”whousedtotakepartintheRomanIsisFeast,thestudiescarriedoutbyJulioCaroBarojaledhimtotheconclusionthat“Shrovetide”(SpanishCarnival)wastheoffspringofChristianity.Tobeexact,intheabscenceoftheconceptofLentitwouldnotexistasithasdonesincethedarkanddistantEuropeanMiddleAges.

Barcelona’sCarnivalisnotveryimportant,thereisnocentralparade-individualdistrictsorganiseandholdtheirown.Atnight-time,duringtheweekbeforeAshWednesdaythestreetsarefullofpeopledressedupandmanypartiesareheld(themostpopularofwhichisusuallyheldintheSpanishVillage-PobleEspanyol-ontheSaturdaynight).Duringthedaychildren’scarnivalsareorganisedandmostschoolsletthechildrengoinfancydressontheFridaybeforeAshWednesday.

TheBarcelona-SitgesInternationalAntiqueCarRallyisheldaboutthistime.Thefestivalconsistsofcoveringtherouteincarsbuiltnotlaterthan1920.Theparticipantsdressupincostumesoftheperiod.NotonlydoSpanishautomobileclubstakepartintherally,butthosefromFranceandAndorraaswell.

ThemainplacesinSpainforCarnivalcelebrationsareCádizandSantaCruzdeTenerife.

Cádiz:InCadizthecarnivalproceduresincludeaspiritedprocession,conteststochoosethebestsingersandcomedians,fancydressballs,theselectionofthequeenofthefestivitiesandfireworks.ThemainattractionistheprocessionwhichisheldtheSundaybeforeAshWednesday.
