SilentSpringisaboutchemicals,specificallyaboutonetypeofchemicalchlorinatedhydrocarbons—andmorespecificallyaboutonefamousmemberofthatgroup,DDT.Manypeoplewhohavegrownupsincethe1960shavenotheardofDDT,butbeforeSilentSpring,andforanumberofyearsafterward,DDTanditsrelativeswereimportanttoolsinthecivilizedworld'sattempttocontrolnaturethroughtheuseoftechnologyandchemicals.DDTisapowerfulinsecticideandwasusedthroughouttheworldtokillinsectpestsofallkinds.

OnemeasureoftheBRICcountries'newimportancetothecarindustryisthat,recessionornot,globalcarsalesin2008maystillhitanall-timerecordofabout59million.Forthefirsttimepassenger-vehiclesalesintheBRICs,ataround14million,arelikelytoovertakethoseinAmerica,whichareexpectedtobetheworstsince1992.Asrecentlyas2005Americaoutsoldthembyover10million.BytheendofthisdecadeChina,alreadytheworld'ssecond-biggestmarket,willprobablyovertakeAmerica'ssalesof16million-17millionina"normal"year.InBrazilsaleshaveincreasedbynearly30%ineachofthepasttwoyears.
