Amuseumeducationspecialistisofgreatmostmuseumstheestablishmentofsuchapostshouldbehighorsheistheonlymemberofstaffwithtraininginthepsychologyoflearning,andhasconsiderableexperienceofanalyzingcomplexconceptsandpresentingtheminasimplewaytoanon-specialisteducationspecialistis,indeed,theonlyprofessionalinterpreterinthemuseum. Itisclearlyreasonable,therefore,forthemuseumtomakefulluseoftheeducationspecialist’sskills,andtoinvolvehimorherinallaspectsofinterpretationandtheplanningofnewdisplaysandlearningisnotjustaboutteachingchildren,thoughchildrenmaybeitsprincipalaudience. Manysmallmuseumsmaynotbeabletoemployaneducationspecialistoftheirthem,thereareotheristhatthelocalSchoolsServicemaybeabletolendateachertothemuseum,perhapsfortwoorthreeyears,whocouldbetrainedtoapplyteachingskillstothemuseumisthatsuitablevolunteersmaybeavailableinthecommunity—perhapsretiredteachers,orteachersnotpresentlyworking—whomaybewillingtogivesomeoftheirtimetothepossibilityissponsorship:alargecompanymightbewillingtofinancetheappointmentofaneducationspecialistforafewyears. Animportantpartoftheworkfortheeducationspecialistinamuseumistoestablishstronglinkswithitslocalorsheisacommunicatorwhohasresponsibilityforkeepingcontactwiththeteachersatlocalorsheshouldmakesurethattheschoolsknowwhatisgoingonatthemuseumandhowtheycanmakeuseofit,andthatthemuseumstaffknowaboutdevelopmentsintheall,itistheirresponsibilitytofindoutwhatschoolswant,andtoensurethatthemuseumdoesitsbesttomeetthoseneedstobeacontinuingdialoguebetweenteachersandthemuseum:themuseumneedstoknowwhattheteachersareteaching;teachersneedtolearnhowthemuseumcouldhelp,andwhatresourcestheycoulduse.
